Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Low Pressure Fuel Pump Assembly Failure

PE24003

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened January 8, 2024 · closed September 26, 2025

the gasoline fuel system

On January 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE24003) to assess allegations of loss of motive power resulting from low-pressure fuel pump failures in certain MY 2017–2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles.  The subject vehicles are equipped with 2.0L 4-cylinder and 2.9L 6-cylinder turbocharged engines and manufactured by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC (FCA US).  Reports received by ODI alleged stall and loss of motive power at speeds above 25 mph, with several reporting that the condition resulted in permanent disablement of the vehicle.  Many reports described recurrence of the failure after an initial repair. During the investigation, ODI determined that the subject vehicles were equipped with fuel delivery pumps supplied by Vitesco Technologies Germany GmbH.  ODI also confirmed that MY 2018–2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles were equipped with the same pump.  ODI’s analysis identified an elevated failure rate associated with the original pumps installed in the subject vehicles.  The failure mode involves interruption of fuel flow, resulting in fuel starvation and an unexpected loss of motive power, typically with little to no advance warning. In responses to ODI Information Requests submitted in April and June 2024, FCA US reported 2,162 customer reports (complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 464 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  Combined with ODI’s data, the investigation identified 1,900 unique VIN experiencing failures.  Review of the combined data confirmed one crash and no injuries, fatalities, or fires. On September 9, 2025, FCA US filed recall 25V-586, covering 29,467 MY 2017–2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles and 24,382 MY 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles, all equipped with the suspect Vitesco fuel delivery pump.  FCA US reported that the remedy is under development, with dealer notifications planned on or about September 16, 2025, and owner notifications scheduled to begin on or about October 29, 2025. The recall action initiated by FCA US addresses the alleged defect identified in this PE. Accordingly, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances, including an evaluation of the remedy once available. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

I was in an accident with another vehicle where my car rear ended theirs. It a pretty bad damage because my car is totaled. The seatbelt never locked and my airbag never deployed, causing me to go headfirst into my wheel and followed my chest. I was escorted to the hospital due to those injures. I was never notified of a recall from either dealership, which they have failed me because there was nothing there to support my body. There were no warning signs or anything of that sort to let me know there was an issue. I never heard anything from Alfa Romeo or Reed Nissan after they did an inspection on my vehicle. I am highly disappointed and suffering from traumatic pain and injury from this.

The contact stated that after driving the vehicle and parking the vehicle, upon returning to the vehicle a short time later, the vehicle hesitated while restarting. On another occasion, the vehicle was started and stalled while driving. Approximately 10 minutes later, the vehicle was able to be restarted. A diagnostic scan of the vehicle indicated a failure with the fuel delivery system. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where a temporary workaround was performed; however, the vehicle became inoperable shortly after being started and driven. No further repairs were completed. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Vehicle is affected by FCA recall 93C / NHTSA recall 25V-586 for Fuel Delivery Module / fuel pump failure that can cause fuel starvation and unexpected loss of motive power. NHTSA recall lookup shows the recall is incomplete and the remedy is not yet available. The vehicle is already symptomatic. It has active DTC P008A / low-pressure fuel system pressure too low, check engine light, and Start/Stop unavailable. It also has drivability symptoms: inconsistent acceleration, hesitation/poor response, and sometimes failing to restart after stopping in traffic, such as at traffic lights. This creates a risk of the vehicle being disabled in traffic or losing motive power without adequate warning.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
NHTSA RECALL #25V-586 Around September of 2025, I notified Alfa Romeo Customer service that my vehicle was experiencing symptoms of this recall. Symptoms include but are not limited to severe fuel pump whine that fluctuates with RPM, as well as intermittent LOMP. The whine is audible 100% of the time. The LOMP occurs intermittently, primarily shortly after starting the vehicle. On multiple occasions, I have to pull my vehicle to the side of the road because it is unable to effectively move under it's own power. Along with this LOMP, symptoms experienced are a heavy misfire along with a few service messages such as "Auto start unavailable, service electronic throttle, and service engine"

The contact stated that while at a complete stop on several occasions, the engine abnormally revved to 1,100-1,400 RPMs. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed low speed on a ramp, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly and failed to decelerate while the brake pedal was depressed. Additionally, the contact stated that while at a complete stop at the red light, the engine revved, and the vehicle accelerated unintendedly while the brake pedal was depressed and struck another stopped vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. No police report was filed. The contact's vehicle sustained minor damage, while the other vehicle did not sustain

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
