BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- The defect
- American Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may get into the rearview camera mounting holes and enter the camera lens and cause a distorted image, or no image at all. Additionally, if the rearview camera view mode is set to top-down view, or switched from that view to another mode in a bright environment, the image may not display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
- What it can cause
- A distorted or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- What the dealer does
- Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is W83.
- NHTSA's note
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
The repair is free, whatever the age or mileage of the vehicle, and whether or not you are the original owner.
Which vehicles
A recall reaches a range of VINs inside these model years, not every car built in them. Yours may not be covered even if it is listed here, and the only way to find out is NHTSA's own VIN lookup .
How this campaign compares
At 212,070 vehicles this is a bigger campaign than 95% of the 19,818 vehicle recalls filed since 1995 whose size NHTSA published. The middle campaign on file covers 472. It covers model years 2019 to 2020, so the oldest vehicles on it were one model year old when the defect was reported to NHTSA.
Honda vehicles have been recalled over the back over prevention once before this, most recently in September 2018 as 18V629000. That is not evidence the earlier repair failed.
This site holds the complaint record for all 2 model years the campaign names. Their owners have filed 1,390 complaints with NHTSA, 95 of them before this campaign was filed. 41 of those name the back over prevention, the system this recall is about — a count of complaints, not of this defect. The earliest of them reached NHTSA in September 2018, 1 year before this filing.
The vehicles on this campaign carry 15 other recalls published here, the newest being: 26V423000 (back over prevention), 26V332000 (air bags), 26V227000 (air bags), 24V064000 (air bags).

A VIN check is the only answer for a specific vehicle, and it also shows every other open recall on it, which is usually the reason it is worth doing rather than reading one campaign.
