STEERING
- The defect
- PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Kenworth T170, T270, T280, T370, T380, T440, T470, T480, T680, T800, T880, W900, W990, C500, and 2022-2023 Peterbilt 325, 330, 337, 348, 365, 367, 389, 520, 536, 537, 548, 567, and 579 vehicles. The steering gears may have been assembled incorrectly, which can cause the gears to fracture.
- What it can cause
- A fractured steering gear can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- What the dealer does
- Dealers will inspect the steering gear serial numbers, and replace the steering gears as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26, 2022. Owners may contact Kenworth's customer service at 1-425-828-5888 and Peterbilt's customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR's numbers for this recall are 22PBE and 22KWE.
- NHTSA's note
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
The repair is free, whatever the age or mileage of the vehicle, and whether or not you are the original owner.
Which vehicles
A recall reaches a range of VINs inside these model years, not every car built in them. Yours may not be covered even if it is listed here, and the only way to find out is NHTSA's own VIN lookup .

How this campaign compares
At 47,500 vehicles this is a bigger campaign than 88% of the 19,818 vehicle recalls filed since 1995 whose size NHTSA published. The middle campaign on file covers 472. It covers model years 2022 to 2023, and the defect was reported to NHTSA in 2022, at or before the oldest model year it covers — as current as a recall gets.
Peterbilt vehicles have been recalled over the steering 16 times before this, most recently in April 2022 as 22V277000. That is not evidence the earlier repair failed.
This site holds the complaint record for 2 of the 54 model years the campaign names. Their owners have filed 15 complaints with NHTSA, 1 of them before this campaign was filed. The earliest of them reached NHTSA in March 2021, 1 year before this filing.
The vehicles on this campaign carry 32 other recalls published here, the newest being: 25V181000 (electrical system), 25V041000 (exterior lighting), 25V014000 (vehicle speed control), 24V915000 (service brakes, hydraulic).

A VIN check is the only answer for a specific vehicle, and it also shows every other open recall on it, which is usually the reason it is worth doing rather than reading one campaign.
Filed by PACCAR Incorporated with NHTSA on July 28, 2022 as campaign 22V547000. Every word of the defect, consequence and remedy above is NHTSA's published record of that filing, not a summary of it.
