FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

15V474000 · July 29, 2015

The defect
Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2015 XG500 motorcycles manufactured January 20, 2014, to July 7, 2015, and XG750 motorcycles manufactured May 12, 2014, to July 7, 2015. The fuel pump modules on these motorcycles have a poor seal at the fuel pump inlet.
The risk
If there is a poor seal at the fuel pump inlet it can cause interruption to the fuel supply, possibly causing a brief hesitation with the abrupt restoration of power. This abrupt restoration of power can lead to loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will install a new fuel pump assembly, free of charge. The recall began on August 21, 2015. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-414-343-4056. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0167.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

15V217000 · April 13, 2015

The defect
Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2015 XG500 motorcycles manufactured January 28, 2014, to March 9, 2015, and 2015 XG750 motorcycles manufactured May 12, 2014, to March 9, 2015. The affected motorcycles may have been manufactured without a rear reflector assembly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
The risk
If the motorcycle is missing the rear reflector it can reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will install a rear reflector assembly, free of charge. The recall began on April 29, 2015. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0620.

The defect
Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2015 XG500 and XG750 motorcycles manufactured June 11, 2014, to August 14, 2014. The fuel tank filler neck may be insufficiently flat, preventing the fuel cap from sealing properly.
The risk
If the fuel cap doesn't properly seal, fuel may leak, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire.
The remedy
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the motorcycle and test to see if fuel can leak from under the fuel cap. Any motorcycle that leaks fuel from under the fuel cap will have its gas tanked replaced, free of charge. The recall began in late September 2014. Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Inconsistent Throttle Response

PE15015

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened April 20, 2015 · closed August 18, 2015 · led to recall 15V474000

the gasoline fuel system

This investigation was opened on April 20, 2015 to investigate reports of inconsistent throttle control on all MY 2015 HD XG750 and XG500 motorcycles. At the time, ODI had 14 consumer complaints and no crashes reported. At the time of closing this investigation ODI has 51 reports (6 of which allege a crash occurred). In addition to requesting information from Harley-Davidson (HD), ODI interviewed complainants and dealer service/parts department personnel.ODI staff also test rode one of the crash bikes to experience the alleged condition first-hand.At low fuel levels (typically below .8 gallon), the engine may stumble and/or stall when fuel flow from the pump to engine is interrupted. This is due to a poor seal at the fuel pump inlet. Ultimately, HD decided to recall (15V-474) the affected motorcycles (MY 2015 XG500 and XG750 produced 1-20-14 through 6-24-15) to install a new fuel pump assembly. With the recall, our information request is moot and this PE is closed.

I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BIKE AND THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO JUST BREAK IT IN. I HAD OTHER PERSONS RIDE IT AND TOLD ME THAT PERHAPS IT WAS THE THROTTLE AND OR FUEL INJECTOR. I CALLED AND COMPLAINED AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT I NEEDED TO JUST RIDE IT MORE AND GET USE TO IT. I SAID IT WAS LOSING POWER AND MAYBE THE INJECTOR WAS CLOGGED. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO THEN SAID THAT BECAUSE IT'S UNDER A WARRANTY AND THE FUEL INJECTOR IS COMPUTERIZED THAT THE BIKE SHOULD BE LOOKED AT BY THE DEALER. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN AND EXPLAINED TO THE TECH WHAT I WAS TOLD. HE SAID WE WILL MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. HE SAID I CAN HAVE A TRAILER PICK IT UP AT MY

I'VE BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. WENT FOR A RIDE ON FRIDAY THE 26 OF JUNE ON THE ISLAND I LIVE ON WITH A FRIEND. I WAS ON A 25 MILE SPEED LIMIT ROAD APPROACHING A DOWN HILL TURN TO THE LEFT. I ENTERED THE TURN MAINTAINING COVER ON BRAKES AND CLUTCH. AS I STARTED LEANING THE BIKE INTO THE TURN THE MOTORCYCLE SURGED THE FUEL BY CUTTING OFF AND COMING BACK ON RAPIDLY GIVING ME TOO MUCH TORQUE. I TRIED BRAKING AND DOWN SHIFTING CAUSING MY REAR WHEEL TO LOCK UP AND SENDING ME SIDEWAYS INTO THE GUARD RAIL. I PINNED MY LEG IN BETWEEN THE GUARD RAIL AND THE MOTORCYCLE CAUSING THE REST OF MY BODY AND HEAD TO HIT ALL OF THE GUARD RAIL AS WELL BEFORE FLIPPING OFF THE BIKE AND

THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET 750 HAS BRAKE FAILURES. THE FAILURES ARE SYSTEMIC TO THE REAR BRAKE CYLINDER CAUSING. I HAVE ACTUALLY HAVE THE LINKAGE BRAKE OFF BECAUSE OF NO THREAD LOCK BUT THE REAR BRAKE JUST SLIDES OVER THE ROTOR AND NEVER STOP THE BIKE ON IT OWN. HD SOLUTION IS TO INSTALL THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART. BIKE NEEDS A RECALL. BELOW IS INDEPENDENT TEST DOCUMENTING THE FAILURES. THE ONLY THINK THAT WILL MAKE HD FIX THIS DEFECT IS A GOV RECALL OR DEATHS AND LAWSUITS. I HAVE INCLUDED A DOCUMENT OF AN EMAIL I SENT TO COWBOY HD OF AUSTIN. DESCRIBING ALL THE PROBLEMS I HAD WITH THE BIKE.

POWER TRAIN
My Street 750 has 11,800 miles. While riding at 65 mph, sudden loss of drive. Pulled over to notice the motorcycle's belt missing and debris on the belt guide and the back wheel. The bolt holding the front sprocket was out of place and made a hole in the cover. The front sprocket was out of place. I was able to walk back my path and found the belt shredded.

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2015 HARLEY DAVIDSON XG750 FROM A DEALERSHIP. I'VE RIDDEN THE BIKE FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AND THE REAR BRAKES WENT OUT. THE MAINTENANCE WAS CURRENT THROUGH THE HARLEY DAVIDSON DEALERSHIP, BUT AFTER A 30 MIN RIDE, THE REAR BRAKES WENT FROM SOGGY TO NIL.

WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, 65MPH, FRONT BELT PULLEY BOLT BROKE CAUSING PULLEY TO DISLODGE. CAUSES BELT TO WRAP AROUND SHAFT AND JAM LOCKING REAR WHEEL. LUCKILY THE PULLEY DID NOT FALL OFF BELT GUARD AND HIT MYSELF OR ANY OTHER VEHICLES. THIS HAS NOT BEEN ADJUSTED DUE TO NOT NEEDING NEW BELT, AND WAS AT SAME SPECS FROM FACTORY. UPON RESEARCH, FOUND MULTIPLE OWNERS SAME YEAR HAVING SAME FAILURES. SO FAR NO ONE HAS WRECKED OR CAUSED INJURY, HOWEVER HAD I BEEN INEXPERIENCED I LIKELY WOULD HAVE. UPON CONTACTING MY LOCAL DEALER WHERE PURCHASED I WAS TOLD THAT HUMIDITY COULD WEAKEN THE BOLT AND CAUSE FAILURE. THIS WAS FEB 27 @ 1330. WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIR. I'M

WHILE RIDING AT LOW SPEED ON CITY STREETS, THE STEERING FELT UNUSUALLY TIGHT. UPON ARRIVING HOME, I LIFTED THE FRONT WHEEL OFF OF THE GROUND AND CONFIRMED THAT SOMETHING WAS BINDING IN THE STEERING HEAD, CAUSING INCREASED STEERING EFFORT AND A "NOTCHY" FEELING. I DEEMED THE MOTORCYCLE UNSAFE TO RIDE. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, I DISASSEMBLED THE STEERING HEAD ASSEMBLY TO INSPECT THE BEARINGS AND FOUND EVIDENCE OF WATER INTRUSION. I FOUND THE UPPER BEARING SLIGHTLY RUSTED AND THE LOWER BEARING SUBSTANTIALLY RUSTED, AND DETERMINED THE RUSTED BEARINGS TO BE THE CAUSE OF THE BINDING. WHILE DISASSEMBLING THE MOTORCYCLE, I DISCOVERED THAT ONE FRONT WHEEL BEARING FELT ROUGH. UPON REMOVING AND

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
