Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Lane Keep Assist System

PE24025

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened September 10, 2024 · closed October 21, 2025

lane departure warning

On September 10, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE) 24025 to assess allegations of lane departures with the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) system engaged in Model Year (MY) 2023 through 2024 VinFast VF8 vehicles. The reports further alleged that the system exhibited difficulty detecting lanes on the roadway and, under certain conditions, provided improper steering inputs that resulted in an inconsistent control effort required by the driver, potentially elevating the risk of a crash or injury. To date, ODI has received a total of 17 related Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) of the LKA system in the subject vehicles. As a part of the investigation, NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) replicated the VOQ- reported conditions in a MY 2024 VinFast VF8. VRTC documented that two conditions within  the MY 2024 VinFast VF8 LKA system may induce the vehicle to deviate laterally outside of the intended travel lane when navigating sweeping roadway curves. First, during sweeping turns, the steering wheel force required may abruptly change mid-turn, altering the steering wheel force equilibrium between driver input and roadway force, potentially causing the driver to unintentionally steer excessively leading vehicle to cross over its lane boundaries. Second, the LKA system may apply steering inputs to maintain the curve that move the vehicle toward the inside lane line and, in some cases, across the lane boundary, increasing the risk of a collision. On August 27, 2025, VinFast filed NHTSA Recall No. 25V-559 to address the safety-related defect in the LKA system. This recall consists of a software update that is intended to refine the system’s steering control and improve the overall driving smoothness. Specifically, the software update will: (i) reduce steering wheel vibration during the activation of the vehicle’s advance driver-assistance system (ADAS); (ii) make it easier for the driver to override the ADAS; and (iii) smooth the transition between an active and inactive LKA system, so that driver inputs deactivating the system may not cause unintended vehicle maneuvers. Because this recall action is taken by VinFast, ODI is closing PE24025. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov. The opening resume identified VOQ #11585817 as a fatal crash involving a vehicle roadway departure at high speed. ODI’s analysis found the crash conditions are not consistent with those observed during VRTC testing for this investigation. The subject vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) sustained fire damage during the collision, rendering the recorded data inaccessible at this time. ODI has no evidence linking this crash to the LKA behavior identified in PE24025 and will continue to monitor for any additional information that might warrant further assessment of this incident.

The contact called on behalf of a client who owned a 2024 Vinfast VF8 Eco. The contact stated that the client was driving on a neighborhood street at 30 MPH, approaching an intersection, and attempting to stop, the brake pedal was depressed however the vehicle failed to come to a stop. As a result, the vehicle crashed into another vehicle that was stopped in front. There was no property damage. The air bags deployed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. It was unknown if any warning lights illuminated. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The client sustained unknown injuries that required medical attention. It was unknown if anyone else was injured. The

crash

Vehicle did not slow down when in assistant driving mode. The vehicle was coming up on an intersection with a stoplight with two cars ahead of it. I had to apply breaks manually with the failure of the system slowing down fast enough. When I manually applied the brakes I pressed them hard after disengaging the driving assistant the car did not send any notifications following disengagement. The automatic emergency braking system also was not activated given that the vehicle had at minimum a cars length distance to stop. I did not receive an alert for the forward collision warning system even before applying brakes. I rear ended another car without any nonfictions to the car making impact as

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

crash · 8,000 miles

The contact leased a 2024 VINFAST VF 8. The contact stated that upon pulling into the driveway with the rear wheels of the vehicle on the side of the roadway, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle unintendedly accelerated. The driver swerved and avoided the residence, and the vehicle crashed into a flowerpot. The vehicle then accelerated 70-80 ft. on the sidewalk, passed several residences, and the vehicle stopped. The air bags did not deploy. There was no injury sustained. No police report was filed. Additionally, the contact stated that while her sister was attempting to park downhill, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated temporarily and responded as needed. The contact also

POWER TRAIN
We have two VinFast VF8 vehicles, one with the VIN [XXX] (VF8 Black) and one with the VIN [XXX] (VF8 White). Both vehicles experienced the same problem with the electric power train at different times. The issue manifests itself as follows: The vehicle suddenly displays a "drive train malfunction error" on the center display, it then jerks a couple of times, loses all power, and stops. After that, it is not possible to put the transmission back into drive or reverse, only neutral or park. VF8 Black experienced this problem first on [XXX]. We contacted VinFast and asked for the vehicle to be serviced under warranty. VinFast picked up the car on 3/17/2025 and took it to their service center

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The forward collision warning keeps faulting. The software sends incorrect errors and shuts off some of the safety features when doing so. The steering wheel is stuck in the 'exit' position, meaning it's retracted and in the highest position, making it difficult to maneuver. Various alarms randomly sound for no reason. The car has had multiple software updates and the problems remain persistent.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
While accelerating onto a highway, several systems faulted including the high voltage and 12v systems, which apparently cause the vehicle to shift into neutral and get stuck in the neutral position (while still on the highway) Several safety systems on the vehicle (such as forward collision avoidance) constantly fault and then reset themselves as well.

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
