The defect
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500, GMC Sierra 2500/3500 vehicles, and 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The left-side or right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.
What it can cause
A detached end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape and project the end cap or fragments of the inflator into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.
What the dealer does
Dealers will replace both RRAB modules, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262569920. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 24, 2026.

The repair is free, whatever the age or mileage of the vehicle, and whether or not you are the original owner.

Which vehicles

A recall reaches a range of VINs inside these model years, not every car built in them. Yours may not be covered even if it is listed here, and the only way to find out is NHTSA's own VIN lookup.

How this campaign compares

At 1,559 vehicles this is a bigger campaign than 63% of the 19,840 vehicle recalls with a published size filed from 1995 up to this one. The middle campaign among them covers 472. It covers model years 2016 to 2017, so the oldest vehicles on it were 10 model years old when the defect was reported to NHTSA.

Chevrolet vehicles have been recalled over the air bags 86 times before this, most recently in May 2026 as 26V325000. That is not evidence the earlier repair failed.

This site holds the complaint record for all 8 model years the campaign names. Their owners have filed 2,453 complaints with NHTSA, 2,428 of them before this campaign was filed. 73 of those name the air bags, the system this recall is about — a count of complaints, not of this defect. The earliest of them reached NHTSA in March 2016, 10 years before this filing.

The vehicles on this campaign carry 3 other recalls published here: 21V504000 (air bags), 21V245000 (seat belts), 20V736000 (air bags).

A VIN check is the only answer for a specific vehicle, and it also shows every other open recall on it, which is usually the reason it is worth doing rather than reading one campaign.
