Owners of the 2012 Honda CBR250R have filed 11 safety complaints with NHTSA between August 2012 and September 2018. The most complained-about system is the engine, named in 10 of them (91%). The typical failure was reported at 1,415 miles, the median across the 10 complaints that gave an odometer reading.

No recall campaign was matched to this year, make and model. That is not the same as a clean vehicle: recalls are issued against production ranges, and the only reliable check is your own VIN.

Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Motorcycle Stalling

the gasoline fuel system

First produced on January 16, 2011, Honda's CBR250R entry-level motorcycle (the subject vehicle) remained in production until being replaced by the MY 2015 CBR300R.In May, 2011, Honda received its first complaint (a field report) concerning subject vehicle engine stalling while decelerating.Honda began a root cause assessment and, in September, 2012, concluded the stalling was due to improperly adjusted engine exhaust and intake valves during engine assembly.Production changes were made to address this issue. The data indicate that subject vehicle engines built with insufficient valve clearances were being corrected during the 600-mile service per the owner's manual maintenance schedule which includes a valve clearance check and adjust. All of the stalling events involved subject vehicles that had not yet had that service completed and most occurred shortly after purchase.ODI's review of Honda's data shows a sharp decline in stalling reports:MY2011 - 48 reports / 43 received prior to October, 2012; MY2012 - 17 reports / 13 received prior to February, 2013; and MY2013 - 5 reports /4 received prior to November, 2013.With the sharp decrease in complaints after February, 2013, no defect trend has been identified, therefore, this investigation is closed. I WAS GOING AT ABOUT 30MPH IN MODERATE TRAFFIC ON MY MOTORCYCLE, AND HAD TO USE THE FRICTION ZONE ON THE CLUTCH A LOT. OCCASIONALLY, WHEN I DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH ALL THE WAY, AND ALSO CLOSE THE THROTTLE (TO NOT GIVE THE MOTORCYCLE ANY ADDITIONAL GAS), THE ENGINE WILL CUT OFF AND DIE COMPLETED. USUALLY, WITH CLUTCH DISENGAGED AND GAS OFF, IT WOULD IDLE AT 1500RPM AND THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD CONTINUE TO ROLL. HOWEVER, THE ENGINE DIED (0RPM, TWISTING THROTTLE DOESN'T DO ANYTHING), AND IT WOULD NOT START UP QUICKLY ENOUGH. SINCE I STOPPED GOING FORWARD BECAUSE THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START, I WAS REAR-ENDED BY A CAR, BUT IT WAS NOT TOO SERIOUS OF AN INJURY. MY HONDA CBR250R HAS DONE THIS A LOT OF

WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ON A COUNTY ROAD, GOING STRAIGHT ABOUT 55 MPH, MY BACK WHEEL LOCKED UP, WITH NO WARNING. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PUSH IT OFF THE ROAD BUT THE BACK WHEEL WILL NOT TURN FOR ANY REASON AND THE CLUTCH IS ALSO EXTREMELY LOOSE NOW.

THE PART THAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM IS A KNOWN SOFTWARE PROBLEM ON THE BIKE AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE BIKE IS STALLING AND CUTTING POWER WHILE I AM RIDING OR AT A STOP, IT SEEMS TO BE RANDOM. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I RIDE, HOWEVER, AND IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE OTHER NIGHT MY BIKE JUST SHUT OFF WHILE CARS WERE FOLLOWING ME AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND I WAS NEARLY HIT. THIS CAUSED THE OTHER MOTORISTS TO BECOME ANGRY WITH ME AND NEARLY PUT ME IN A TERRIBLE SCENARIO. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AMONG CBR250 OWNERS AND IT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED BY HONDA. THERE ARE A TON OF VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER RIDERS AND YOU CAN SEE JUST HOW DANGEROUS IT IS. THE MOTORCYCLE

MOTORCYCLE WILL STALL INADVERTENTLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND COMING TO A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT. THIS WEEK, IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE. SEVERAL TIMES THE WEEK BEFORE AND I DOUBT I AM THE ONLY PERSON EXPERIENCING THIS BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON YOUTUBE: MY STALLING IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE VIDEO ABOVE. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, BUT IT HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING AND CAN POSSIBLY BE DEADLY.

BASICALLY WHEN YOU DOWNSHIFT ON THE BIKE NO MATTER WHAT SPEED OR GEAR IT WILL JUST SHUT OFF EVEN WHEN THE CLUTCH IS PULLED IN. IT DOESN'T DO IT EVERY TIME BUT IT WILL HAPPEN AT LEAST ONCE EVERY TIME I RIDE. *JS

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
