Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Powered vehicle rollaway

PE16015

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened December 16, 2016 · closed August 11, 2020

the power train

On December 16, 2016, ODI opened PE16-015 to investigate seven complaints alleging incidents of powered rollaway in model year (MY) 2012 through 2014 Land Rover/Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar XF vehicles. The complaints all alleged that the rollaway incidents occurred after the operators shifted to Park and exited the vehicle with the engine left running. All of the incidents alleged that crashes resulted from the unexpected vehicle movement and three alleged injuries. Two of the complaints counted in the opening resume (ID's 10760326 and 10884136) involved the same vehicle and incident. ODI has not received any new complaints since PE16-015 was opened, resulting in current ODI report totals of 6 incidents, 6 crashes and 3 injuries. Field data provided by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to ODI's information request letter for PE16-015 included 10 allegations of powered rollaway incidents in the subject vehicles, including 9 alleging crashes. Updates provided by JLR through October 25, 2019, have identified one additional powered rollaway allegation in the subject vehicles. The new incident included a crash allegation, bringing the JLR field incident totals to 11 incidents and 10 crashes. None of the JLR reports allege injuries. Two of the JLR reports are duplicates of incidents reported to ODI, resulting in a total of 15 incidents, 14 crashes and 3 injury allegations in the subject vehicles. ODI's analysis of system design and field incident investigative data has not identified any mechanical or electronic faults that have caused subject vehicle transmissions to shift out of Park with no operator input nor has the analysis identified any faults that would result in a failure to execute a valid Park shift selection. JLR's field investigations of powered rollaway incidents have assessed the root cause to be operator error. Based on these assessments and the low rate and declining trend in rollaway incidents, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not foreclose the Agency from taking further action if warranted or the potential for a future finding that a safety-related defect exists based upon additional information the agency may receive. For more detailed information about field incident analysis for the subject and peer vehicles see the attached report. The ODI reports (VOQs) cited above can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers with duplicate records shown in parentheses: 10504853, 10548937, 10565212, 10631673, 10760326 (10884136), 10892346.

ON SEPT 27, 2013 AROUND 7A.M., I DROVE MY CAR TO THE MAIL BOX WHERE I PULLED OVER ON A ROAD WITH A SLIGHT INCLINE AND UP ON THE ROUNDED CURB, PUT IT IN PARK, OPENED THE DOOR, WALK ALONG THE SIDE OF THE CAR, CROSSED IN FRONT TO RETRIEVE MY MAIL. AFTER GETTING MY MAIL, WHEN I TURNED AROUND TO GO BACK TO THE CAR, I SAW IT DRIVING FORWARD AND CROSSING THE ROAD TOWARDS THE OTHER SIDE! INSTINCTIVELY I JUMPED IN THE PASSENGER SIDE AND WAS TRYING TO REACH THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE CAR HIT THE CURB, THROWING ME BACK A BIT. THE IMPACT OF THE CURB MUST HAVE TURNED THE WHEELS TO THE LEFT AND THE CAR PROCEEDED DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND HIT A TREE WHICH FINALLY STOPPED THE CAR. I CONTEST THAT THE CAR COULD

A FEW WEEK LATER, TOWARDS THE END OF 2016 AND LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME THE CAR STARTED TO SMOKE AND OVERHEAT, SO I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, INTO A PARKING LOT AS QUICKLY AS I COULD. To the best of my ability id like to explain why my car does not operate . i have taken my car to two jaguar dealership and have talked to Rocco' s European car repair shop as well and the all say that what is defective with my car is the central junction box. When I asked them all as to why this does not function they all said its a known problem with the car specifically due to "water ingress" leaking from the windshield wiper pump and on to the underside of the Central junction box and my wires are corroded and cause electrical failure as the say water and electricity are not a safe combination. with this malfunction my car no longer starts . ENGINE
The car employs a start/stop system to shut the engine when stopped. When it restarts the engine, the idle speed drops to about 400 RPM (half normal idle) and surges when it recovers. It has also stalled several times. I've asked the dealership to fix this, but when at the dealer, the system would not shut the engine so they have not verified the issue. The first safety issue happens if the driver is not expecting the surge resulting in sudden acceleration. The second issue happened when the car stalled at an intersection with other cars trying to get by. This has happened many times since I purchased the car in 2015. The stop/start function stopped working for a period of time when the

There have been constant issues with this vehicle. The car has a strong odor of gasoline when driven. No alarms or indicators tells me that there is a problem. There have been safety recalls on this particular model that have the exact same issues but when checked my vin number is not listed. This needs to be investigated because I believe that this is an continuance of the same issues that has affected the 2013 XF Jaguars.

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
