Owners of the 2020 Honda CRF1100A have filed 9 safety complaints with NHTSA between May 2020 and August 2024. The most complained-about system is the fuel and propulsion system, named in 6 of them (67%). The typical failure was reported at 1,000 miles, the median across the 5 complaints that gave an odometer reading.

No recall campaign was matched to this year, make and model. That is not the same as a clean vehicle: recalls are issued against production ranges, and the only reliable check is your own VIN.

Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) on August 10th, 2020 to investigate 26 reports of stalling due to clogged fuel filters on model year (MY) 2018 - 2020 Honda African Twin (CRF 1000 - 1100) motorcycles. Many of the owners allege the subject vehicle would suddenly stall while riding. Although the stalling speeds varied, most consumers allege the stalling occurred at highway speeds. This stalling condition is caused by clogged fuel filters. The subject vehicle fuel filters become contaminated with zinc-oxide (corrosion). The corrosion is coming from the inside of the fuel tank, along the end seam of a joint weld. The corrosion clogs the fuel filter, restricts fuel flow to the engine, and subsequently causes a sudden engine stall.During complainant interviews, ODI learned the bikes can sometimes be restarted after the initial stall. However, several consumers described this restart as causing a false sense of security. After restarting the bike and attempting to accelerate/merge into traffic, the bike quickly stalls again. This time the rider is placed in the middle of traffic, potentially causing a crash or risk of injury. On October 9, 2020, ODI received Honda?s Information Request (IR) response and learned that Honda was aware of 36 complaints, 87 field reports and 83 warranty claims of stalling related to clogged fuel filters. There were no claims of crashes or property damage associated with the alleged defect on the subject motorcycles. Additionally, Honda initiated three different modifications or changes to the fuel tank during production. On March 11, 2020, Honda released a customer satisfaction campaign to remove the zinc oxide that can contaminate the fuel pump filter, causing reduction of fuel flow. The part numbers for the fuel tank did not change after the implementation of the zinc oxide removal process. The process improvement was a running-change and no parts were withdrawn from production. On October 5, 2020 Honda added a new maximum contamination specification. This new specification was initiated to limit the contamination from the tank supplier. The tank supplier improved the cleaning process to meet the low contamination limit.Discussions and analysis of the data between ODI and Honda resulted in the manufacturer recalling certain 2018-2019 Africa Twin Adventure Sports (CRF1000L) and 2020 Africa Twin Adventure Sports (CRF1100L) motorcycles.Contaminants inside the fuel tank may cause the fuel filter to clog, resulting in an engine stall, and increasing the risk of a crash.ODI is closing this PE with Honda?s voluntary safety recall 20V-797. With the recall action taken by Honda, this investigation is closed, as further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist on other models or MY vehicles outside of the recall scope. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
TFT/MID (Multi Instrument Display) fails to show any information, including speed, RPMs, gear selection, fuel gauge, etc. Can be inspected upon request. Safety compromised as vital information on the vehicle is not available. Problem is ongoing. Vehicle will be taken to dealership for further diagnostics. Due to nature or failure, no messages (or any other vehicle information) can be displayed. Failure occurred randomly while vehicle in motion, and will not resolve after many troubleshooting steps.

ENGINE
While traveling at 45mph in traffic engine shuts off causing bike to decelerate rapidly almost getting rear ended. I have read many post of this same thing happening with others.

ENGINE
Bike will Stall occasional from a stop while trying to accelerate under light throttle. Just had a stall in heavy traffic waiting on a light to turn left off The Las Vegas Strip.. not cool, don't think its a DTC issue I think its the engine mapping, funny thing is when I had started the bike while I suited up it stalled while idling just 5 min before. I always ride S3/Urban in the city. Had a stall a few weeks back after a long highway ride in S3/Tour, same deal, waiting for a light to turn left. Just over 3200 Miles on it. Have had 4 stalls total.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
experiencing the Fuel Starvation issue. While riding and throttle applied , the engine sputters and will not accelerate. Puts you in a dangerous situation while in traffic.

LOST OF POWER ON HIGHWAY AND WHEN STRUCK IN CITY TRAFFIC, USUALLY OCCURS WITH LESS THAN HALF A TANK OF GAS AND WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE ABOVE 90F. ENGINE STALLS AS IF STARVED OF FUEL.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

7,200 miles

MOTORCYCLE IS ONLY 6 MONTHS OLD WITH ABOUT 7,200 MILES. CRUISING ON I-75 NEAR OCALA FL AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE ENGINE BEGAN SPUTTERING AND STALLING. FRIGHTENING SAFETY THREAT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. HAD TO PULL OFF ROAD AND HAVE MOTORCYCLE TOWED TO NEAREST DEALER. I WAS 300 MILES FROM HOME AND INCURRED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS OF EXPENSE. I UNDERSTAND THIS HAPPENS TO MANY OTHER LIKE MODELS. APPARENTLY THE COATING INSIDE THE GAS TANK DETERIORATES AND CLOGS THE FUEL FILTER AND PUMP. HONDA IS WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT WILL ONLY HAVE THE DEALER CLEAN THE TANK AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY. THIS WILL LIKELY HAPPEN AGAIN SINCE THE SYMPTOM, NOT THE PROBLEM, WAS REPAIRED. HONDA SHOULD BE REDESIGNING A

If this is your car and a dealer keeps failing to fix it, your state's lemon law may require the manufacturer to replace it or buy it back. What each state asks for , read from the statutes.

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
