back-over prevention

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 109 complaints for rear-view camera failures on Model Year (MY) 2021 to MY 2025 Polestar 2 vehicles. On June 26, 2024, Polestar recalled certain MY 2021 – MY 2024 Polestar 2 vehicles for visualization issues during a backup event and failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 (Rear Visibility) (Recall 24V-477). Specifically, Polestar stated that the rear-view camera “may have limited visualization, be inoperative, or function incorrectly when reverse gear is engaged, thereby affecting the driver’s rear visibility capability in a backing event.” Polestar proposed to remedy this condition via a software update to minimize an Infotainment Head Unit (IHU) graphical rendering limitation by shortening the retry times of the camera streams, as well as removing the rendering of the map in the driver display during backing events to release the graphic memory for the use of the rear-view camera. Subsequent consumer complaints to ODI reported continued rear-view camera outages in remedied vehicles pointed to limitations in Polestar’s 24V-477 approach, and, on April 25, 2025, Polestar filed a new recall to address the rear-view image visualization issues (Recall 25V-280). Polestar's stated remedy for this recall provided an additional software update intended to always maintain the high-speed signal connection between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and IHU, instead of toggling on and off by request. The update would also be designed to add a reset of the IHU video signal receiving hardware in case a synchronization error is detected, instead of just setting an error message. On June 21, 2025, ODI began receiving complaints from consumers whose vehicles had been remedied according to Recall 25V-280, but whose rear-view cameras were nevertheless continuing to fail in the same manner that they had previously. In July, ODI discussed the complaints with Polestar, which confirmed that their over the air software remedy for Recall 25V-280 did not correct the original issue. ODI is therefore opening this Recall Query to further evaluate the adequacy of Recall 25V-280’s remedy. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

PARKING BRAKE

1 injured

I believe that my 2024 polestar 2 suffered a critical failure with the parking brake/weight sensor interlock. While parked in my driveway, (on incline) I parked my vehicle, opened the door (which should also engage the parking brake) and exited my vehicle. The vehicle at this time appeared to be in park. I closed my vehicle door, walked away, and approximately 4 seconds later, my vehicle rolled in reverse to the bottom of my driveway. I acknowledge that there is snow on the ground as seen by my security camera. However upon additional review, it is clear that this was not a traction issue. The vehicle did not “slide” down my driveway. You can clearly see the front tires spinning when zoomed

BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS

1 injured

The manafactuer distributed a software update to correct issues regarding reverse camera settings. This update has not corrected the issue in my polestar and, in fact, has caused many other disturbances forcing me to seek service at a the closest dealership. When reversing, it will activate the emergency stop function, which has caused much anxiety and stress because not only are the parking sensors nonfunctional, but the thought of the emergency breaks being activated without threat or my regard again is distressing and misleading.

crash · towed

I would go into reverse and the camera would appear but then disappear as I’m backing up. No more blinking or telling me I am about to crash. Even 3D camera doesn’t work. Drivetrain feels very strange since last OTA update. Making weird noises when driving. Battery sounds like it’s screaming. Something is really wrong.

TIRES
Leased vehicle 7-25-24. Driver’s rear tire had ongoing slow leak beginning several months after start of lease. We filled with air and reset stored tire pressure. This would last a couple months and same tire would begin to lose some pressure again. Finally at our 20,000 mile scheduled checkup, Polestar service advised to purchase a new tire, which we did, 3/19/26. The car was delivered back to us within a couple of days. On 5/7/26, that same tire completely blew out while driving on the freeway. Was able to exit freeway without an accident, but driving on rim. Towed to Polestar service who diagnosed rim cracked. Both tire and rim completely replaced. Though we paid 5/18/26 (see invoice),

Warranty states they are good for 45k. Had to have tires replaced before they caused serious damage to the vehicle, occupants of the vehicle, or the other drivers on the road.

Purchased a used 2024 Polestar from Kia Van Nuys, CA on 5/18/2026. The Acknowledgement Regarding Recalls form noted that "The Report indicates that the Vehicle is NOT subject to an open recall at this time. I took the vehicle to the Polestar service center on June 1, 2026 and found that the previous 2 recalls for TCAM Reload and a recall on VIDA soft wear version 4.2.13 which required a total soft wear update.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
After installing the recent software update (version 5.0.10) that was intended to fix the rear camera not appearing when shifting into reverse, my vehicle has continued to experience the same problem, now with significantly increased frequency. Nearly every day--sometimes multiple times a day--the infotainment system/center screen will fail to boot up before shifting into reverse and the camera view will not appear. The gap between starting the vehicle, the system booting up, and the camera appearing, varies every time, sometimes up to 60 seconds. Occasionally, the center screen will remain black, with no indication that the system is booting up, for up to 30 seconds after starting the

TIRES
On 03/29/2026 at approximately 11:00 AM, I was driving my 2024 Polestar 2 southbound on [XXX] near [XXX] in the center lane at approximately 80 mph in heavy traffic. Without any prior warning — no vibration, no TPMS alert, no unusual noise, no warning lamps or messages of any kind — the left rear tire suffered a catastrophic tread/belt separation. The tire is a Continental original equipment tire, size 245/40R20, with ContiSilent acoustic foam lining and POL1 Polestar-specific markings. DOT number: [XXX] , manufactured week 17 of 2023 at Continental's [XXX] plant. The tire was factory-installed original equipment and had never been removed or remounted. The entire center tread band

VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM
On a high humidity evening all of the windows fogged up but the climate system was completely unavailable to use. All of the buttons were “greyed out” and I could not operate the front or rear defroster. As a result, I had zero visibility a few moments after I started driving. I immediately had to pull over and look up how to reset the computer system that controls most of the car’s functions, which took several minutes to figure out. There should never be a situation where you cannot turn on the defroster because of a software glitch.

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
