BACK OVER PREVENTION:SOFTWARE
- The defect
- Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T, and 2027 R2 vehicles. The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- What it can cause
- An obstructed rearview camera image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- What the dealer does
- Rivian has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-1866. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 9, 2026.
The repair is free, whatever the age or mileage of the vehicle, and whether or not you are the original owner.
Which vehicles
A recall reaches a range of VINs inside these model years, not every car built in them. Yours may not be covered even if it is listed here, and the only way to find out is NHTSA's own VIN lookup.
How this campaign compares
At 98,828 vehicles this is a bigger campaign than 92% of the 19,821 vehicle recalls with a published size filed from 1995 up to this one. The middle campaign among them covers 472. It covers model years 2022 to 2027, so the oldest vehicles on it were 4 model years old when the defect was reported to NHTSA.
This site holds the complaint record for 9 of the 12 model years the campaign names. Their owners have filed 289 complaints with NHTSA, 265 of them before this campaign was filed. 9 of those name the back over prevention, the system this recall is about — a count of complaints, not of this defect. The earliest of them reached NHTSA in August 2022, 4 years before this filing.
The vehicles on this campaign carry 23 other recalls published here, the newest being: 26V625000 (electrical system), 26V508000 (exterior lighting), 26V009000 (seat belts), 26V003000 (suspension).
Check your own car
A VIN check is the only answer for a specific vehicle, and it also shows every other open recall on it, which is usually the reason it is worth doing rather than reading one campaign.
Filed by Rivian Automotive, LLC with NHTSA on September 16, 2026 as campaign 26V597000. Every word of the defect, consequence and remedy above is NHTSA's published record of that filing, not a summary of it.
