24V562000 · July 25, 2024

The defect
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Genesis Coupe vehicles. A return spring in the ignition lock switch may fracture, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the vehicle is started in gear, without the parking brake applied.
The risk
Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Dealers will replace the ignition lock switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 266.

The defect
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
The risk
An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy
Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

16V722000 · October 7, 2016

The defect
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.
The risk
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
The remedy
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.

SUSPENSION:REAR

15V756000 · November 16, 2015

The defect
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 28, 2011, to April 6, 2015, equipped with manual transmissions. In the affected vehicles, if the differential and the suspension rear crossmember were not properly aligned during vehicle assembly, the bolts that secure the differential may loosen.
The risk
If the rear differential loosens from its mounting position, the driveshaft may disconnect from the differential, resulting in a loss of propulsion and an increased risk of a crash.
The remedy
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will verify the proper assembly of the differential, free of charge. The recall began on December 30, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 135.

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in the driveway and turned off, her daughter noticed big flames of fire coming from underneath the front driver's side of the vehicle at approximately 4:00 AM. The contact stated that the fire then extended to the middle of the front end of the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that the fire had damaged her daughter's vehicle as it was parked next to hers. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with the assistance of the fire department. A fire department report was filed. The contact was unsure whether a police report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle

SERVICE BRAKES
The brake pedal travel is inconsistent when applying the brakes. Sometimes when you press the brake pedal the brakes respond immediately. Other times when you apply the brakes you have to push the brake pedal an uncomfortably long distance before the brakes start to respond. This problem is intermittent, so you never really know when its going to happen. This is dangerous. It appears that vehicle models in prior rears, up to 2012, have a recall for the ABS / Stability Control System for these same car types.

fire

The vehicle had been parked at my residence and powered off for approximately two weeks. Without warning, the vehicle spontaneously caught fire originating from the engine compartment. The vehicle was not running, had not been driven recently, and there was no collision or external fire source. The fire caused extensive damage to the engine bay, wiring, and surrounding components. The passenger cabin was largely unaffected, indicating the fire originated under the hood. There were no warning lights, messages, or prior symptoms before the incident. The cause appears to be an electrical or mechanical defect that remained energized while the vehicle was powered off. I later became aware that

ENGINE
The vehicle developed rod knock consistent with rod bearing failure. The symptoms match known Hyundai Theta II engine defects that led to prior recalls and warranty extensions on similar engines. Vehicle was diagnosed by dealership with rod knock. Manufacturer denied goodwill repair citing warranty expiration despite failure characteristics matching known manufacturing defects. Engine failure presents a safety concern due to potential sudden loss of power.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The contact had received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool showed no open recall.

SERVICE BRAKES

NHTSA complaint 11681735. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

ENGINE
Total engine failure due to bearing displacement which caused the engine to fail and throw a rod. This caused 3 holes in the engine block which caused oil to pour out onto the highway. There have been multiple class action lawsuits with Hyundai due to the same issue with other Hyundai models, and I believe that this vehicle should have an engine recall as well. This is a safety issue which can cause collisions and potentially lead to injury or death

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
