The defect
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.
The risk
If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
The remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

In the affected vehicles, the ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to get stuck in the "Start" position.
The risk
If stuck in the "Start" position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the "Accessory" position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. If the vehicle is in a crash, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury.

I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON 1/15/16 IN WHICH I WAS SIDESWIPED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, I HAD NO BRAKES AND NO STEERING CONTROL. THIS CAUSED ME TO REAR END ANOTHER VEHICLE AND HIT A TREE HEAD ON. THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE OR CONTROL IT. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR KILLED SOMEONE ELSE. I AM VERY CONCERNED. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK IN THE SHOP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WITH ELECTRICAL ISSUES, YET THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING OR IT WAS MINOR CORRECTIONS. I HAVE BEEN VERY CONCERNED WITH THE ELECTRONICS OF THIS VEHICLE SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN AUGUST 2015. THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED THE TRUCK.

AIR BAGS

1 injured · crash · 5,200 miles

I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER SMALLER VEHICLE PUSHING ME INTO A MINIVAN IN FRONT OF ME. ON INITIAL IMPACT, THE DRIVERS SEAT WAS DISLODGED FROM THE MOUNTING FRAME. WHEN I HIT THE MINIVAN IN FRONT OF ME, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND MY SHOULDER SEAT RESTRAINT DID NOT ENGAGE CAUSING MY EYE TO STRIKE THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE NERVE DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF THE SEAT BELT NOT ENGAGING AND THE AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYING. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED ENOUGH DAMAGE, INCLUDING FRAME DAMAGE, THAT IT WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS. IT WAS 6 WEEKS OLD AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I WAS THE ONLY PERSON IN THE ACCIDENT WHO REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. I BELIEVE THE SEAT MOUNTING FAILED,

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
