Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Seat Belt Pretensioners May Rupture

RQ22003

Closed recall query · opened August 8, 2022 · closed May 26, 2023 · led to recall 23V094000

the seat belts

On August 8, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) based on 3 incidents alleging front seat belt pretensioners that may rupture during deployment, on model year (MY) 2020-2022 of various Hyundai and Kia Models, resulting in 3 injuries (note: one incident occurred outside the U.S. and its territories).Between October 2021 and March 2023, Hyundai and Kia have filed the following 11 safety recalls for pretensioner rupture: NHTSA Recall No. 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-123, 22V-127, 22V-218, 22V-354, 22V-447, 22V-458, 22V-816, 23V-094, and 23V-210.Hyundai/Kia have stated that the abnormal deployment of the pretensioners is due to over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe that can cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment, which can result in injury to vehicle occupants. The various makes/models covered by the above recalls include approximately 405,900 certain 2020-2022 Hyundai Accent, 2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra and Elantra HEV, 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, 2020-2022 Hyundai Venue, 2021-2023 Genesis G80, 2023 Genesis G80 EV, 2023 Genesis G90, 2023 Genesis GV60 EV, 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2021-2022 Kia Sorento HEV, and 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV.In response to ODI's investigation, in December 2022, Hyundai notified ODI that they would be conducting testing to validate subject vehicle seat belt pretensioners. This evaluation included sled testing and software testing which was performed by Hyundai and its suppliers. The tests were intended to evaluate pretensioner deployment characteristics based on the unique deployment signature of the subject and peer vehicles. ODI met with representatives from Hyundai on several occasions during the investigation to discuss testing progress and data. As a result of the testing, Hyundai was able to simulate the pretensioner failures. It was determined by Hyundai during testing, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment in the event of a crash which can cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment.Hyundai thus notified ODI of their decision to proceed with a safety recall, to expand the scope of the previous safety actions. In view of the recall actions taken by Hyundai and Kia, ODI concerns have been addressed. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.

SUSPENSION

I was driving my vehicle down a pier to the parking entrance for the USS Midway, 610 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101, when for no reason my 2022 GV70, AWD, veered sharply (45 degrees) to the right and made violently contact with a cement block on the pier used to moor ships. I believe there was a failure of the right front suspension system. When I got out of the vehicle to inspect the damage I found some broken bushings on the ground. They were split in half. The right wheel was pushed back 18 inches. I collected all the broken parts and had the vehicle towed to Sun Road Collision Center, 7303 Clairmont Blvd, San Diego, CA 92111. I asked them to save all the broken parts of the suspension

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Subject: Vehicle Safety Incident Report – Fuel Pump Disconnection and Oil Leak To: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Date: July 27, 2026 I am submitting this report to detail a recent vehicle malfunction that posed significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. While driving to work, I experienced a situation where my vehicle was unable to shift gears properly or accelerate as expected. This loss of acceleration and responsiveness created substantial control problems, making it difficult to maneuver safely in traffic. Notably, no dashboard warning lights were illuminated at the time, which gave me the false impression that the vehicle was operating correctly.

STRUCTURE:BODY
Hello [XXX], I was wondering are you handling the case against Hyundai/Genesis. I own a 2022 GV70 43K on it, took it to the dealer on 7/24/26 photos on file at the dealer in Dublin, Ca. Got home in the evening, and parked my car in my garage, then left the next evening 7/25/26 to a wedding got home late, 7/26/26 drove my card to get a bite to eat and seen this, (see photos) I reviewed on line and this a known issue with Hyundai/Genesis a well documented factory defect. That the paint just lifts off due to no being cured properly. That it prematurely oxidizes and weakens and peels off, mine is not oxidized but it just has peeled straight off the hood. This is like toyota white tacoma Trucks

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The vehicle has experienced a pattern of recurring electrical failures beginning shortly after purchase, involving driver door controls (window, lock, mirror, and interior lighting functions), which have required four separate repair attempts over approximately three years, including replacement of a door module, a wiring harness, and a door switch assembly. Despite these repairs, the same driver door electrical failure has recurred multiple times. The vehicle has also experienced a seat memory module failure (module was replaced), and a persistent rear hatch malfunction that has never been resolved. The most serious concern is that the vehicle has, on multiple occasions, unexpectedly shut

ENGINE
My vehicle is at the Genesis dealership with what they even consider a common problem. Road debris putting a hole in the unprotected Turbo Intercooler Radiator. This is a safety issue because the loss of power in the vehicle once you lose your turbo. The radiator is very unprotected down at the bottom of the front of the vehicle and Genesis needs to do something about this. This is going to cost me $1500 to fix there not covered by Genesis even though it's a serious design flaw. I know I'm not the first person to report this, as I've seen forum posts about it and the issue is quite common. If it's so common, and it's so vulnerable, there most definitely is a design flaw in the vehicle.

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
