A complaint is an unverified account by the person who filed it, not a finding of fault. One complaint is one ODI number, which is how NHTSA counts them.

A recall is the manufacturer conceding a defect, and the repair is free. Whether one covers your particular car is a question only its VIN can answer, because a campaign covers a production range rather than a model year.

Red marks a system with a recall campaign against it. One complaint can name several systems, so these add up to more than 37.

By the year NHTSA received them, which is not the year the failures happened. They peaked in 2026 at 33.

This is the year the complaint was filed, not the year the failure happened. The range runs from 2025 to 2026, the last of them a part year, which is why its column is drawn faint.

Crash test ratings

NHTSA New Car Assessment Program

NHTSA has not crash tested the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9. Its New Car Assessment Program tests a selection of each year's vehicles and does not reach motorcycles, heavy trucks, motorhomes or most low-volume models, so an absence here says nothing about how the vehicle would perform. It is not a low score.

What owners have reported about this vehicle is below, and it is a different question: a crash test measures what happens to the people inside in a controlled impact, while a complaint records what broke during ordinary use.

SEAT BELTS

2 injured

Two safety incidents occurred (October and November 2025) involving the power-folding second-row seats. A child was seated in the second-row captain’s chair when a sibling activated the seat from the third row. The seat failed to detect the occupant and continued moving forward, creating a crushing hazard. In one incident, my daughter (approx. 40 lbs, 46 inches tall) was partially trapped and screamed as the seat compressed her and/or tightened the seatbelt. I had to intervene to stop the mechanism. I later tested this myself and confirmed the issue is reproducible. While seated, the seat continued moving forward and pushed me into the front passenger seat without automatically stopping.

The motorized flush door handles lack an automatic anti-pinch resistance sensor when retracting. If an object, hand, or child’s finger is caught inside the door handle while the vehicle locks, the motor continues to force the handle shut. This creates a severe crushing and entrapment hazard. This is available for inspection upon request. My child’s finger got caught in the door handle while the vehicle was locking. There have also been several near miss incidents. The problem has been reported to my local dealership where I purchased the vehicle, but they do not appear to take the issue seriously. The issue has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or

VISIBILITY/WIPER
On XXX, while driving my 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9, the front windshield wiper system completely stopped operating. I activated the windshield washer because the windshield was dirty. Washer fluid sprayed normally onto the windshield, but the front wipers did not move. I then tried AUTO, LOW, and HIGH settings, and none of them worked. This created a safety hazard because washer fluid remained on the windshield and reduced visibility while I was driving. I immediately pulled over and parked in a safe location. I tested the wipers again while parked, but they still did not operate. After arriving at my workplace, I tested them again and they remained inoperative. I recorded a video while the

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
On XXX, I experienced a safety-related problem with a rear door on my 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9. While the vehicle was parked, I attempted to open the rear door from inside the vehicle, but the door would not open. The child lock was believed to be OFF at the time. I attempted to operate the interior door handle, but the rear door remained locked and could not be opened from inside. This incident was directly witnessed by one of my coworkers, who was present when the problem occurred and can confirm what happened if additional information is required. I am concerned that an occupant could be unable to exit the vehicle in an emergency if this condition occurs again. A rear door that cannot be

TIRES
When reaching speeds of approximately 55 to 60 mph, the car would begin to shake and the steering wheel would excessively begin shaking. You did not feel like you had great control of the car. The front two tires required replacing due to the foam being detached/mangled within the tires. The dealership put the new tires onto the back of the car and rotated the original back tires to the front of the car as part of the repair/replacement.

Other/I am not sure
We bought two of these car seats and the base on account we liked the feature that the car seat can rotate in the base... This car seat is UNUSUALLY UPRIGHT on its own and I believe the base insert makes it worse. I am a first time mom and I didn't realize how bad the ergonomics of this car seat are until recently, but my baby absolutely HATES the car now because she associates it with how uncomfortable this car seat is. I cannot stress the emotional distress this car seat has caused me and my baby. Any product like this should not be on the market

If this is your car and a dealer keeps failing to fix it, your state's lemon law may require the manufacturer to replace it or buy it back. How many repair attempts it takes, and how long you have to file, is set by the state you bought in and by nothing on this page.

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
