The defect
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV and 2014-2020 Outlander vehicles. The liftgate gas spring cylinders may corrode and lose pressure, which can result in a gas spring cylinder rupture or the liftgate falling unexpectedly.
The risk
A gas spring cylinder rupture or a liftgate falling unexpectedly can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy
MMNA will replace the left and right liftgate gas springs, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 17, 2026. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. SEAT BELTS: REAR/OTHER:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY

20V403000 · July 13, 2020

The defect
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Outlander and 2018-2019 Outlander PHEV vehicles. The second-row center seat belt buckle may interfere with the right-side seat belt buckle when the seat backs are folded down. The interference may cause the right-side seat belt buckle cover to come off, making the buckle latch inoperable and unable to restrain an occupant.
The risk
An unrestrained occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
The remedy
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will modify the second-row center seat belt buckle cover, install a new warning label to the second-row seat support base, and provide a new warning label insert for the owner's manual, free of charge. The recall began September 1, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-20-004.

PARKING BRAKE

18V070000 · January 26, 2018

The defect
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Outlander and 2013-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles. Water may enter the rear brake calipers causing the parking brake actuator shafts to corrode and possibly bind.
The risk
If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear brake calipers and replace the parking brake boot and lever or the brake caliper body, as necessary. Dealers will also replace the piston assembly of the rear brake caliper. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-002.

I PLACED MY CHILD IN THE CAR SEAT IN THE REAR SEAT OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS A WARM DAY SO ONCE SHE WAS SAFELY FASTENED, I STARTED THE CAR TO RUN THE AIR CONDITIONER. IT HAS A KEYLESS START AND THE KEYS WERE IN MY POCKET. ONCE THE CAR WAS STARTED, I GOT OUT TO GO BACK TO THE BACK SEAT WITH MY DAUGHTER WHILE WE WAITED ON MY WIFE, WHO WAS STILL IN THE RESTAURANT PAYING THE BILL. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR, THE KEYS WERE STILL IN MY POCKET. I CLOSED THE DRIVER DOOR. IT STARTED BEEPING BECAUSE THE KEYS WERE NOT PRESENT (THEY WERE IN MY POCKET, NOT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE). THIS CAUSED THE DOORS TO LOCK. I TRIED TO OPEN ALL OF THE DOORS, THEY WERE ALL LOCKED. THE KEY FOB WOULD NOT UNLOCK THE

POWER TRAIN
Transmission has filled me twice now. The first time the transmission out was when the car is at approximately 42,000 miles. The first time it went out we were able to pull over safely, but it just gave out while going high speeds on the highway. The second time was luckily in my neighborhood where we were able to coast it back home. Both times not much warning was given. The first time was the one that put us and others at risk being on a road with 60+ speed limits.

I rear-ended a car after they came to a complete stop at a green light on a road with a 50mph speed limit. I attempted to stop but in the rain my car hydroplaned, and I hit them. Upon impact my seatbelt did not lock up and my airbags didn't deploy despite the fact that I was going at least 20mph. I ended up hitting the steering wheel pretty hard and still have pain, spasms, and soreness.

THE REARVIEW CAMERA SYSTEM SUDDENLY QUIT SHOWING VIDEO WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE CAMERA ITSELF STILL WORKS AS I CAN GO INTO THE SETTINGS FOR BRIGHTNESS, COLOR, ETC., THE BACK UP SENSORS STILL BEEP WHEN I AM BACKING UP AND THE REVERSE LIGHTS STILL WORK AS WELL. FROM LOOKING AT THE MITSUBISHI FORUM ( , APPARENTLY THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR MANY PEOPLE. ONE FORUM MEMBER STATES AN ETACS CODING ENTRY CALLED 'REAR_CMR_PRST' SAYS IT IS 'NOT PRESENT.' I FEEL THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE, PARTICULARLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PUBLIC PARKING SPOT. I REALIZE THIS IS A CONVENIENCE ITEM FOR MY YEAR OF VEHICLE (2014), BUT SINCE THE CAMERON GULBRANSEN KIDS TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ACT OF 2007

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
