The defect
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Outlander and 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles. Due to a software error in the in-vehicle infotainment system (A-IVI), the rearview camera image may freeze, or not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
The risk
A rearview image that does not display properly reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Dealers will update the A-IVI software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 30, 2025. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-25-001. This recall replaces and expands previous NHTSA recall number 23V345. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 23V345 will need to have the new remedy completed.

STEERING

2 injured · crash · towed

I was driving my vehicle, the roads were snowy so was traveling slowly. I attempted to slow down a little more, when I pushed on the brake there was absolutely no response, usually you can feel and even hear the brakes (abs) functioning, there was nothing. I also tried to steer, again, no response, the vehicle continued straight, we went into a ditch and rolled on our side. I tried to put down a window but all dash lights, etc were off and car was not running. I pushed the "start button" dash lights came on, could roll down windows, etc... and the car even starts and runs now. It seems as though there was no "control" of any kind, we were going slow and I even had time to tell my passenger,

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

crash · towed

The shifter assembly was replaced by the manufacturer and I do not know if the item is available for inspection as the dealership handled the replacement. Mine and my daughters safety was put in danger on April 10, 2024 when I was turning into a parking space at my doctors office and went to put the car into park the car accelerated on its on over an embankment and into a busy 5 lane highway. When trying to stop the brakes failed several times and the only thing I could do to stop it was push the on off button to kill power to the engine. Upon stopping we looked at the car and saw quite a bit of damage to the car after going over the embankment and through several bushes and small trees.

SERVICE BRAKES

crash · towed

2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV brake-by-wire failure during a downhill U-turn at 100% battery state of charge. Pedal went completely soft to the floor, unable to stop, causing a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
My 2024 Outlander locked all the doors while the engine was running and the FAST key was inside the vehicle. I exited normally through the driver’s door and did not intentionally lock the vehicle. I want this documented on the repair order and I’d like the keyless-operation system checked, including the interior key antenna and any BCM/keyless-system faults or available software updates. I am available for inspection. Not reproduced except by myself. Vehicle has been inspected by no one. No warning. This is a hazard because a child or pet could have been locked inside. I could be stranded in an unsafe location or in severe weather that would pose a risk to myself. The car could run out of

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
The vehicle exhibits an intense, overpowering raw gasoline smell inside the passenger cabin, specifically originating from beneath the rear seat area. When the climate control/AC fan is turned on, raw fuel vapors are siphoned directly out of the dashboard air vents into the faces of the occupants, causing headaches and dizziness. Two independent mechanics have pressure-tested the fuel lines and confirmed there are no liquid fuel leaks, proving this is a structural vapor siphoning defect. Mitsubishi has documented this exact factory defect under TSB TS-25-13-001 (NHTSA ID: MC-11018002-0001), but the local dealership refuses to perform the safety repair without a massive out-of-pocket payment

SEAT BELTS
Front driver seat belt does not retract and has caused damage to door. Vehicle is available for inspection. We are worried that the seatbelt will not function properly in an accident since is does not function properly now. No confirmation by dealer, going in next week for service, however, dealer representative did say on phone that Mitsibishi s don't have seat belt problems??? First noticed problem last winter when I noticed the dents in the door frame being caused by non retracting seatbelt.

SERVICE BRAKES
I own a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander that I purchased new on December 21, 2024. Since shortly after purchase, the vehicle has experienced ongoing problems involving the brakes, electrical system, and fuel fumes entering the passenger cabin. The most serious issue is the brake system. I have experienced hard braking, inconsistent brake response, brake warning lights, and at least one incident where the brakes suddenly failed and I had to take emergency action to stop the vehicle. The dealership has attempted multiple repairs, including replacing the brake booster, master cylinder, and other brake components, but the problem continues. The vehicle has also had repeated electrical problems,

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
