The defect
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2017-2019 MINI Cooper Countryman vehicles. These vehicles may be missing a crash protection plate near the high pressure fuel pump, which may result in a fuel leak in the event of a crash.
The risk
Without the crash protection plate, in the event of a crash, the fuel pump can become damaged, causing a fuel leak and increasing the risk of a fire.
The remedy
MINI will notify owners, and dealers will install a crash protection plate, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on October 22, 2018. Owners will receive a second notification when the repair is available. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

AIR BAGS

crash · towed

I was stopped at a red light behind a line of cars. A toyota tundra going 45-60 mph rear ended me. This sent me into the car ahead of me and sandwiched me in between the two. It destroyed the front and back of my vehicle. The tundra's airbags went of, mine did not. Despite me taking most of the damage and force. The car is totaled.

ENGINE
My car is a 2019 Mini Countryman All4 S. It currently has 17,000 miles. I bought it new, and it has only been serviced by the Dealer. On July 20, it was in for an oil change, and they informed me that right engine mount was starting to tear and needed to be replaced. The price quoted was $1,135.83. I have owned many cars with a lot more age and mileage, and have never had to replace an engine mount. They said if I did not replace it, it would eventually damage other parts of the engine. After talking with other Mini owners, I found out it is common for this part to fail much sooner than it should. They all felt it should be recalled, particularly due to the repair cost and short lifespan. I

ENGINE
75000 miles, the clip on the cam shaft has failed and I need a new engine for the car not to stall at traffic lights. Regular maintenance. Service center confirmed. There is an engine light and now the vehicle is unsafe and unusable with low miles!

NHTSA complaint 11707265. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

POWER TRAIN
This car is a PHEV. I experienced a drivetrain malfunction warning noted on instrument display. Vehicle states it can continue to be driven “moderately” with reduced drivetrain output. This is similar to an incident recently in which the instrument cluster stopped working following a drivetrain warning on the instrument cluster. Dealer has not yet diagnosed this latest problem but for the previous issue states it is due to high voltage battery not being fully charged when driving but does not acknowledge any faults with the system.

ENGINE
Water pump broke; car overheated and belt needs to be replaced.

AIR BAGS
In July 2022, I kept getting a warning that the passenger restraint system is malfunctioning whenever somebody sits on the passenger seat. I brought my car to Mini of Austin and they had the system being reset but the warning came up again a few days later when somebody sat on my passenger seat. In August 2022, I brought my car back to Mini of Austin and a week later they told me that they had to replace the airbag sensor and it would take weeks since they had to order it from Germany. They told me they would let me know when the part arrived but they didn’t tell me that the part had arrived until I asked them in October 2022. I brought my car to Mini of Austin again to have the sensor

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
