Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Electronic Brake Module Component Failure

PE24011

Still open preliminary evaluation · opened April 11, 2024

the brakes

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received multiple Early Warning Reporting field reports alleging a loss of brake boost assist in MY2023 Cadillac LYRIQ vehicles. The reports allege a hard brake pedal, followed by a “Brake System Failure” message at start up or while driving. The EWR field reports have been verified by General Motors (GM). GM stated the electronic brake control module, also known as “eBoost”, has an internal spindle that can fracture during an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) event. GM further stated that due to the fracture, the vehicles can lose brake assist, experience speed limitation, and ABS would lose some functionality. GM indicated a new material clean break point was introduced in the assembly plants in May 2023.  GM has also developed an over the air (OTA) update, which will cycle the brake booster similarly to an ABS event at start-up for every key cycle. If the spindle fractures during this start-up cycling, a warning lamp will illuminate to prompt the customer to bring the vehicle to the dealership to be diagnosed and repaired under warranty. This software update was not conducted as a recall. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS

crash

Backing out of driveway and screen went black and a collision occurred a second or two later. We have had the Lyriq in the shop multiple times for glitchy screens and screen going black but never has been fully resolved. I did recieve a recall letter (unfortunately I threw it away) but now it shows no recalls (strange). This black screen issue has been a problem since day 1 but now it has resulted in a collision. I have been unable to even back my car out of the garage when raining due to the sensitivity of the collision detect so there is NO excuse that it didn't alert. Cadillac has had the car since the accident and claim nothing is wrong with it and they are not responsible. I do not

NHTSA complaint 11682101, quoted in part. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

VISIBILITY/WIPER
The gauge cluster/infotainment screen dims automatically when the light sensor on the dash senses the environment has gotten darker. The problem is that this happens extremely early at dusk/dark hours when it's still fairly bright outside, and the brightness of the screen is too dim to see things clearly. Also, once this automatic dimming happens, there is no way to turn the brightness back up. This feature also CANNOT be disabled in the settings anywhere. This results in a safety issue where the screen is not sufficiently visible at times when the auto dimming (which is also tied to the automatic headlights) kicks in for the screen.

NHTSA complaint 11630577. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING
During dusk and dawn conditions, the vehicle dims the dashboard lighting to the point that everything is very difficult to see. They are diming the displays when the exterior lighting conditions are still too bright for the very dim display. I have owned many GM vehicles with this type of automatic diming and this is the ONLY vehicle that has this problem. There is NO user fix available. This is a safety problem and GM needs to be forced to provide a fix. Many owners complain about this problem and there is no fix available from dealers.

NHTSA complaint 11630444. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The entire left portion of the screen became inoperable and remained a black screen despite attempts to reset the system. The left side of the screen contains information such as gear selection, speedometer, lane keep assist, and many other important information. There is no other way to see what speed you are going besides this screen. Several others in my cadillac lyriq facebook group have experienced this issue, it is a major safety concern and needs to be addressed immediately before someone gets hurt from this.

NHTSA complaint 11630145. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
Weather was dry. Time was 5:30 PM - still sunlit. Driving down the interstate, 70 MPH in the middle lane of a three lane highway. Super Cruise is active, no cars in front of me within 500+ feet. I MAY recall a partially blown tire in the lane to my left. All of a sudden, car brakes and slows abruptly to about to about 40MPH. I can not recall of brakes were active but my car was configured for "one pedal driving" so when the accelerator was disengaged, the brake is applied. "Service Driver Assist" warning comes on. The service driver assist icon on the dashboard remained yellow. The next morning, the service driver assist icon was gone.

NHTSA complaint 11610956. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING
Vehicle is automatically braking at low speeds when there is no reason to do so. It is as if the vehicle thinks something is there but there is nothing there

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
