The defect
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Santa Fe HEV, Elantra, Elantra HEV and 2022 Elantra N and Santa Fe PHEV vehicles. Due to a damaged printed circuit board, the rearview camera image may fail to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
The risk

The remedy
Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 271.

Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Pedestrian alert sounds

DP22005

Closed defect petition · opened January 27, 2023 · closed August 7, 2023 · led to recall 22V063000

the electrical system

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.

AIR BAGS

crash · towed

During the accident, the airbag in the steering wheel, barely deployed and threw sparks in the air. Passenger door airbag ruptured. I have pictures of the torn airbag. The cab of the vehicle filled with smoke and sparks came out around the steering wheel. Driver felt like their pants are on fire. To the best of my knowledge, there has been no inspection of the airbag system.

POWER TRAIN
The car was shaking alot but the engine light was off. Started it the next dat and the check engine light came on. Went to auto zone to see what the codes were. The 1st and 3rd cylinder are misfiring. The car was just serviced for the 60,000 mile tune up in june 2026. This problem started August 14, 2026. The dealership is stating that the spark coils or cylinders are not under warranty even though it was just serviced

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
My passenger's front door side vent window glass shattered unexplainably while I was making a left hand turn at 15 mph. This occurred at 7:25am in the morning after pulling my car out of my garage and driving about 1/3 mile before the unexplained glass explosion/shattering. The sound made was a loud bang/pop. Air temperature was around 68 degrees, no air conditioning was being used at the time. No other cars or pedestrians were around when it occurred. I inspected the glass and it does not appear as if there was any possibility it was caused by a rock or a projectile such as a bullet or bb gun. As mentioned the component that failed was a fixed vent window that does not open. Fortunately no

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
This is a 2022 Santa Fe PHEV with just 33k miles on it. While driving on freeway, vehicle displayed warning sign for "Check Hybrid System" and the Check Engine light and Battery light switched on. Sensing a loss of power with the acceleration, I managed to get off the freeway and had to get the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership. Once they checked the vehicle, they reported they had to recalibrate the HSG resolver motor and claimed the issue was now fixed. I collected the vehicle back from the dealership and to my horror, on the drive back home, the exact same problem resurfaced and I experienced a loss of power and stalling again. Now I have to tow the vehicle to another dealer again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
First the vehicle randomly lost all power and engine function, so was taken to the Hyundai service center. It was a safety issue as we had to coast to the margin in heavy traffic. Hyundai attempted a fix and returned it to us. It developed issues before we even got home. Now it is has been 6 months in the service center with continuously new issues. Every time they assure us it is fixed and we try to take it home, it develops another failure and the check engine light returns. The technicians have told us they have no explanation for the multiple failures and are not confident they can permanently fix the vehicle. The failures are unrelated and are with the manifold, gasket, CVVD,, oxygen

NHTSA complaint 11698232, quoted in part. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
I have taken my Hyundai Santa Fe 2022 PHEV under warranty for a fix of being in reverse, the function not working, the car revs aggressively not in gear and then put it in park and the car aggressively jolts forward in park like a hard gear change. Hyundai replaced pcm and said it was fine. I took car and immediately noticed grinding noises and straight back to Hyundai. They claim it's fine. Today same issue with reversing and aggressive car jolting. Hyundai is going to take it back tomorrow. I do not feel safe in this vehicle. It felt like the transmission was going to give out on the freeway. The rpm are maxing out at 5-20 mph and sometimes don't want to engage in drive. Extremely unsafe

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
