The defect
Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
The risk
In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
The remedy
Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-574-535-2100, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Keystone's number for this recall is 17-307.

Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Emergency Exit Obstruction

PE15018

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened May 1, 2015 · closed July 21, 2015 · led to recall 15V409000

equipment

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a complaint of a partially obstructed emergency exit window on a 2014 Montana trailer manufactured by Keystone RV which alleged the roof ladder impeded full opening of one of the two rear emergency exit windows.ODI notes that these trailers are equipped with as many as three (3) emergency exits, often including the window adjacent to the rear window in question.ODI further notes that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) do not apply to this case, as no emergency exits are required for this vehicle. However, the window is clearly marked as an emergency exit, yet may not function as one.Misleading signage may lead to a delay in occupant egress and pose an undue risk to safety.Keystone's recall (15V-409) to remove the label marking the window as an emergency exit or to replace the window will eliminate the risk of an occupant mistaking the subject window as an emergency exit and result in one of the functioning emergency exits being used.Keystone's actions resolve the issue raised by this investigation and therefore this investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited in this investigation can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification number:10692688. Note:Complaint number 10583668 was erroneously associated with this investigation when opened.

MY '14 MONTANA HAD A DEFECTIVE DOMETIC 9100 AWNING. RECALL #13E-019 DATED 4-19-2013. THE RECALL WAS DONE BY KEYSTONE. NOW THE MOTOR HAS FAILED AGAIN AND THE AWNING WILL NOT ROLL UP, MAKING THE USE OR MOVEMENT OF THE RV IMPOSSIBLE. A RV SERVICE PERSON SAID THE MOTOR WAS BAD, I CALLED DOMETIC AND ASKED FOR HELP, THEY REFUSED ANY HELP. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THE RECALL WAS SUPPOSED TO CORRECT. I HAVE ORDERED A NEW MOTOR AT MY EXPENSE AND WILL HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT INSTALLED WHEN I RECEIVE IT. THE MOTOR PART NUMBER HAS BEEN CHANGED 4 TIMES, THE LAST CHANGE WAS 4-2016. I WAS TOLD BY DOMETIC THAT THE PART NUMBER CHANGE WAS BECAUSE OF THE CHANGE IN THE MOTOR SUPPLIER. THE CURRENT MOTOR PART

THE LATCH TO THE REAR EMERGENCY WINDOW BROKE. (I DISCOVERED THIS WHILE OPENING THE ADJACENT WINDOW FOR VENTILATION). THIS ALLOWS THE WINDOW TO FLAP OPEN AND CLOSED (ON ITS HINGE) AS YOU TRAVEL DOWN THE ROAD. THE WINDOW IS FOR EMERGENCY EXIT SO THE LATCH HAS NOT BEEN USED AND APPEARS TO HAVE BROKEN FROM METAL FATIGUE. CHEAP PART MADE WITH CHEAP ALUMINUM METAL.

MY RV HAS A SET OF FOLDING STEPS FOR ENTRY. THERE ARE 4 STEPS. THE TOP LEFT RIVET IS ALL BUT PULLED OUT. THEY ARE UNSAFE FOR USE, HAVE A LOT OF FLEX WHEN USED AND REQUIRE THE PLACEMENT OF CONCRETE BLOCKS UNDER THEM TO BE USED SAFELY. KEYSTONE HAS A RECALL ON QUAD STEPS. #15-224. MY DATE OF MANUFACTURE FALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DATE RANGE OF THIS DEFECT RECALL. WHEN I CALLED KEYSTONE I AM TOLD THERE IS NO RECALL FOR MY VIN NUMBER. MY STEPS HAVE THE EXACT SAME DEFECT. KEYSTONE REFUSED ANY ASSISTANCE. PICTURES HERE: *TR

WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF PURCHASING A NEW KEYSTONE MONTANA 5TH WHEEL THE REAR FIRE EMERGENCY WINDOW LATCH BROKE. IN ORDER TO CONTINUE USING THE 5TH WHEEL THE WINDOW HAD TO BE SECURED SHUT WITH WIRE TIES. THIS EMERGENCY WINDOW IS ONE OF ONLY THREE FIRE EXITS FROM THE TRAILER. IT IS THE ONLY FIRE EXIT IN THE REAR EXTRA LIVING QUARTERS. IT HAS BEEN OVER A YEAR WITH THIS PART ON "BACK ORDER". NOW I AM TOLD THEY NO LONGER PRODUCE THIS PART AND KEYSTONE RV DOES NOT SEEM TO WANT TO FIX IT AT ALL. I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF THESE FAULTY EMERGENCY WINDOW LATCHES THAT HAVE BROKEN AND ARE NOT BEING FIXED BY KEYSTONE RV. SOMEONE WILL EVENTUALLY DIE IN A FIRE IF THIS

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
