Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Seat Belt Pretensioners May Rupture

Closed recall query · opened August 8, 2022 · closed May 26, 2023 · led to recall 23V094000

On August 8, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) based on 3 incidents alleging front seat belt pretensioners that may rupture during deployment, on model year (MY) 2020-2022 of various Hyundai and Kia Models, resulting in 3 injuries (note: one incident occurred outside the U.S. and its territories).Between October 2021 and March 2023, Hyundai and Kia have filed the following 11 safety recalls for pretensioner rupture: NHTSA Recall No. 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-123, 22V-127, 22V-218, 22V-354, 22V-447, 22V-458, 22V-816, 23V-094, and 23V-210.Hyundai/Kia have stated that the abnormal deployment of the pretensioners is due to over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe that can cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment, which can result in injury to vehicle occupants. The various makes/models covered by the above recalls include approximately 405,900 certain 2020-2022 Hyundai Accent, 2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra and Elantra HEV, 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, 2020-2022 Hyundai Venue, 2021-2023 Genesis G80, 2023 Genesis G80 EV, 2023 Genesis G90, 2023 Genesis GV60 EV, 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2021-2022 Kia Sorento HEV, and 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV.In response to ODI's investigation, in December 2022, Hyundai notified ODI that they would be conducting testing to validate subject vehicle seat belt pretensioners. This evaluation included sled testing and software testing which was performed by Hyundai and its suppliers. The tests were intended to evaluate pretensioner deployment characteristics based on the unique deployment signature of the subject and peer vehicles. ODI met with representatives from Hyundai on several occasions during the investigation to discuss testing progress and data. As a result of the testing, Hyundai was able to simulate the pretensioner failures. It was determined by Hyundai during testing, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment in the event of a crash which can cause metal fragments to enter the vehicle occupant compartment.Hyundai thus notified ODI of their decision to proceed with a safety recall, to expand the scope of the previous safety actions. In view of the recall actions taken by Hyundai and Kia, ODI concerns have been addressed. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.

crash · towed

My daughter was driving the car and about to go around a turn when she says her steering locked up and she ran over a curb on the opposite side of the road, popping two tires. She was going slow enough at the time that there were no injuries, only damage to the car. We told the dealership about the incident and had it towed to the dealership. The dealership did not thoroughly address the problem. When I took the car from the dealership I tried to jiggle the keys as I was driving. I had this problem with a Chrysler years ago. If the key was bumped while driving the power would shut off and the power steering would fail. In this case the power to the car did shut off when I slightly turn the

towed · 32,000 miles

The contact owns a 2021 Hyundai Venue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he made a left turn, and the steering wheel became firm and difficult to maneuver. The contact then stated that the electronic power steering warning light and the safety and steering features warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to navigate the vehicle off the road safely. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ECU (Electronic Control Module) failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not yet been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.

SEAT BELTS
My vehicle is experiencing engine challenges. My check engine light has been on for more that half of this year. I took my car to get a diagnostic , and it was returned reported as normal however the check engine light re-appeared. My car make a noise and does not accelerate properly. My driver door is missing a handle, there was never a handle, the screws to show a handle was placed originally, and one of my seat belts is not attached properly causing my back seats which can go down engage in frequent friction in order to realize seats down. My car is well under 100,000, and it would be completely unfair for me to stay in this faulty contract.

SERVICE BRAKES
Last week I was driving my daughter’s Venue and the brakes became hard. Crunching noises. I suspected I had dropped my water bottle and perhaps it rolled under the brake pedal. It was hard to depress I heard the same crunching noises as I tried to use the brakes. Drove home 1.5 miles slowly and it continued to occur all the way. I had it towed to the dealer. Been there a week and they cannot replicate it. I mentioned I had an oil change 48 hours earlier. They said the oil had been over filled which they corrected. I contacted Jiffy Lube and they took exception to this. Idk what to do. I am nervous to drive it or return it to my daughter. Dealer wants me to pick it up. We are at an impasse.

MY 2021 venue had less than 24,000 miles when this problem occurred. i am the original owner and until recently, worked from home. i started having issues when i put the key in the ignition to start my vehicle. none of the dash lights or A/C control would come on. i had to re-try two to three times to get it to work. when i took my vehicle in for regular maintenance and informed my dealership of the issue they did a diagnostic and called me with the results. i was informed there was a problem with the tumbler in the ignition switch and that it would be covered under my warranty; however, the warranty did not cover the re-keying of my entire vehicle. i would have to continue to use my key

POWER TRAIN
Lost all acceleration and car started bucking while making a a left through oncoming traffic narrowly avoiding getting t boned on passenger side of vehicle with my child on that side of vehicle. No check engine light or codes during or after incident. Even though the car was now not idling correctly. had car towed to dealer for the fifth time and they reprogrammed the transmission for the third time. They called to tell me it was ready for pick up. I refused and asked that they diagnose the issue since it has become dangerous to drive the vehicle. They drove the car looking at live data and discovered the transmission was slipping. And replaced the transmission. Someone is going to get

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
