The defect

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021-2023 CLS450, E450, E450 All-Terrain, AMG E53, AMG GT43, AMG GT53, and 2021 AMG CLS53 vehicles. The 48-volt ground cable connection located in the engine compartment may not be tightened properly and may result in the ground cable overheating.

The risk

An overheated ground cable increases the risk of a fire.

The remedy

Dealers will inspect the 48-volt ground cable connection and repair it as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 22, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2024MMNNNN.

Dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 28, 2024. Owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, on February 23, 2024, April 19, 2024, June 28, 2024, August 9, 2024, October 1, 2024, and December 2, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 23V-445.

The 12-Volt battery in the trunk may not be properly secured, which, in the event of a crash, can cause electrical connection failure, disabling various safety features including, emergency call (eCall) system, electric seat adjustment, hazard warning lights, and automatic door locks.

The risk

The inability to operate safety features (eCall system, hazard lights, electric seats, or automatic door locks) can increase the risk of injury during a crash.

The remedy

The defect

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021-2022 C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, EClass Coupe/Convertible, CLS, AMG GT 4-doors Coupe, and EQS vehicles with a heated leather steering wheel. Due to a software error in the hand detection control unit, the hands-off detection might not detect when the driver's hands are away from the steering wheel when using the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system.

The risk

Deactivated hands-off detection will prevent DISTRONIC system features from functioning, including warnings to grab the steering wheel and calling first responders as part of the Active Emergency Stop Assist, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

The remedy

Dealers will update the hand detection control unit software for the DISTRONIC system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 6, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2022040010.

When turning the steering to maximum wheel camber, the wheel rims roll over the sidewall of the OEM low-profile Pirelli tires, damaging the tires and causing bubbling in the sidewall. This happens at a negligible speed, such as exiting a parking space. This vehicle is 3+ years old with 15k miles. Low-profile tires appear to be incompatible with the steering design.

Twice within a year a "48 voltage battery malfunction" warning appeared on my dashboard. Then a red warning light appears and I had about 30 seconds to find a safe place to pull over as loss of power causes deceleration of the vehicle . The cause, according to the diagnostic test performed by 2 different Mercedes dealerships, is that a software update is needed. A know of no situation where the machine crashes first then you're told to update its software. I am concerned that this will unexpectedly happen again and possibly on a road where pulling over to a shoulder may not be possible in the little time given before power failure.

An underbody splash shield (one of three, I believe), covering the transmission (the middle of the three) detached at highway speed and fell off the vehicle. This caused the leading edge of another shield to detach, which then, due to air flow, began dragging the highway. It was quite a noise; initially I thought it was a tire blow out. I quickly decelerated to try to move to an exit (it was urban highway with no shoulders), at lower speeds, the panel stopped dragging. There was no road debris involved in the event. there is a recall on my vehicle for over 4 months now. i keep going/contacting the local dealers about the issue and they keep telling me to come back in a month and every time they tell me there is no remedy yet and they dont know when exactly they will be able to fix it. and according to NHTSA this could increase the risk of crash or injury. please help me either get this fixed or make sure its safe for me to drive. thank you
