AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

23V865000 · December 20, 2023

The defect
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. The risk
An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
The remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

2 injured · crash · towed

Uncontrollable Sudden Acceleration 3 times while I drove the car, it suddenly and rapidly accelerated. Eventually, the car crashed and was totaled. The first time was 3/31/25 when my wife and I went to the car wash. To exit the car wash, I put the car in drive and lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. I immediately braked and the car went back to normal. Over 3 years nothing like this happened before. The 2nd time was only 8 days later. On 4/8/25, I was driving the car at moderate speed in the center lane of a large street and while changing from the middle lane to the right lane to prepare to turn right at the next street, the

SERVICE BRAKES

1 injured · crash · towed

I was driving down a steep hill with two curves. Shortly before the first curve near the top of the hill I attempted to decelerate by pressing the brake pedal. There was no response whatsoever. I tried a couple times then realized that I had to do something different. I put the car into neutral and then actually reverse and nothing happened. I didn't hear the engine change or anything. I tried the e-parking brake to no avail. I then tried the power button for a few seconds. All the while hitting the brakes. By this time I was near the first big curve and had to steer. Given the terrain I didn't think I could drive onto a curb. After the second curve I was in the oncoming lane and noted a

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Multiple door actuator locks are faulty and broken, conveniently just out of warranty. The first right passenger door lock broke/faulty in October 2025, leading me to discover a class action lawsuit was filed against Toyota for faulty actuators. This can be found here: [XXX]. This faulty door lock was fixed as a goodwill gesture from Toyota; The same issue occurred recently for the front driver door, leading me to bring it to the dealership to confirm the issue and note that the actuator is "faulty" and needs replacement. Toyota refuses to cover this ongoing issue with the door actuators and is refusing to fix this concern or part. This is a major safety issue in case of a crash; if the

VISIBILITY/WIPER
Wipers are turning on without me doing it. I took it to the dealer and they cannot see nothing I was told that there are no recalls, but I herd of at lest another Camry with the same issue.

STEERING
22’ Camry LE. Was driving over a bridge that’s undergoing construction, as many areas around me are. There were few lines painted to distinguish lanes. Driving in the right lane when (I’m assuming) Lane Assist suddenly pulled me to the right. Thankfully I caught it before anything had happened, but if it hadn’t, I would’ve gone straight into a concrete barrier at the edge of a bridge on a busy street (and over one). The most unsafe part? This feature can’t be disabled permanently. It’s something that has to be disabled every time you start the car.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
My Toyota vehicle has a recurring HVAC/air conditioning odor problem that produces a strong vinegar-like or mildew smell from the air vents whenever warmer weather returns and the air conditioning system is used again. The odor is extremely unpleasant and affects the air quality inside the vehicle cabin. The condition repeatedly returns seasonally despite attempts to clean the system. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Toyota dealership for inspection and was told that this issue is “common with Toyotas.” The dealership did not provide a permanent repair and instead recommended spraying a cleaning product into the HVAC system. The cleaner did not resolve the issue, and the odor

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
