Recalls (3)

POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT

20V692000 · November 10, 2020

The defect
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Explorer, 2014-2015 Taurus and 2014 Edge vehicles equipped with 2.0L or 2.3L engines and front wheel drive. The support bracket for the front drive axle halfshaft may fail.
The risk
The failed bracket could result in a loss of park function which can cause unintended vehicle movement, and loss of motive power while driving which increases the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the link shaft bracket, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners received an interim notification detailing safety risk December 8, 2020. A second letter will be mailed when parts become available in January 2021. The recall began February 2, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S63.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

15V005000 · January 9, 2015

The defect
Ford Motor Company (Ford) notified the agency on January 8, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2014 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured April 15, 2014, to May 8, 2014, and 2015 Lincoln MKC vehicles manufactured April 21, 2014, to May 15, 2014. On April 30, 2015, Ford expanded the recall to cover an additional 45,505 vehicles, including certain model year 2014-2015 Ford Transit Connect vehicles manufactured November 11, 2013, to August 29, 2014, 2014-2015 Ford Fiesta vehicles manufactured April 10, 2014, to June 17, 2014 and 2014 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured April 30, 2014, to May 21, 2014. Improper nickel plating of components within the fuel pump may result in the fuel pump failing.
The risk
If the fuel pump fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began on February 27, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S30.

POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT

14V393000 · July 2, 2014

The defect
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
The risk
If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
The remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.

Defect investigations (1)

An investigation means NHTSA has decided a pattern is worth examining. A preliminary evaluation is often closed with no action; an engineering analysis is the stage that usually precedes a recall.

Wheel Separation

Closed preliminary evaluation · opened May 20, 2015 · closed January 4, 2016

the wheels

On November 29, 2014, ODI received a complaint reporting the complete separation of an original equipment 22-inch alloy wheel rim mounted on the right front position of a model year 2014 Ford Edge vehicle (VOQ 10661278).The driver indicated that the right-front corner of the vehicle suddenly dropped while driving, causing the vehicle to go off the road to the right and into a field. The right-front wheel rim was found to have broken into two pieces. The owner said that there was no prior warning or wheel related problems with the vehicle. The vehicle had been driven approximately 8,500 miles at the time of the incident. On May 29, 2015 ODI sent an information request to Ford asking for detailed information related to the specific 22 inch alloy wheel used on the Edge as well as any peer vehicles which used the same type of wheel. On July 17, 2015 Ford provided ODI with the requested information. Ford's search showed that the single incident reported to ODI is the only instance of a wheel failure on the subject or peer vehicles. The failed wheel was sent to the National Transportation Service Board (NTSB) materials analysis laboratory for examination. The NTSB determined that the wheel failed because of a severe impact that caused a crack that rapidly propagated around the circumference of the wheel, The rim fracture surface had a predominantly rough appearance consistent with an overstress fracture (rapid fracture)There were no abnormalities or unique features associated with the fracture initiation site.Metallurgical analysis of the rim found that the material was within specification and no anomalies were identified that could have contributed to the failure.See the full NTSB report for more details.Based on the absence of additional failures and the results of the wheel material testing and failure analysis, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The Agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted. The following VOQ is associated with this investigation: 10661278

I was traveling southbound on a two lane hwy. I slowed down and used my blinker to alert the semi behind me that I was making a left hand turn. Upon making the left hand turn, a vehicle passed the semi and tboned me on my driver’s side front and back doors. My airbags never deployed and I hit my head on my driver’s side window. The damage was bad enough that I could not get out of my car. Neither the front or back doors could be opened.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
The rear view mirror backup camera continues to stop working and occasionally camera shows everything 280 degrees upside down. this is a MAJOR safety issue !!!!!!

NHTSA complaint 11748617. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER
The backup camera works periodically. Over a year ago, I went to Fiesta Ford to complain but it would cost me over $1000 to repair the camera. Many rimes it will start to work and during my back up, the screen would go black. There were several times when this occurred where I almost backed into another car backing up at the same time. The message on the screen says camera currently not available.

SERVICE BRAKES
On three separate occasions, the brake pedal has gone all the way to the floor, with braking power reduced to a scary, dangerous level. An independent mechanic ran a diagnostic scan on one of those occasions and received an ABS Module fault. They bled the system, and the brakes worked well (fault went away) -- until the next incident, in which the car decided to randomly 'fix' itself about 20 minutes later. Independent shop and the dealership performed in-depth inspections of the entire braking system and could not find the issue. This hydraulic failure is a documented safety problem on other Edge models and should be the subject of a recall for the 2014 Ford Edge.

NHTSA complaint 11736795. Filed by an owner and not verified by NHTSA or by us.

SERVICE BRAKES
Brake pedal felt mushy, took vehicle to repair shop and had master cylinder replaced. Problem persisted so took vehicle to a different repair shop and had brake booster replaced. Pedal felt firmer but then a hissing sound could be heard while driving without using brakes. Had brake booster replaced again as well as the vacuum hose connected to booster. Now Pedal goes all the way the floor requiring excessive pressure to stop vehicle and a high pitched hissing sound is heard when applying pressure to brake pedal. Hissing sound still present while car in motion without touching brakes. Vehicle had to be put into neutral to stop. Backing out of driveway, vehicle continues to roll slightly even

VISIBILITY/WIPER
The backup camera malfunctions, and has been doing so for about a year. When the vehicle is put into REVERSE sometimes the camera screen will be black for a few moments, followed by a message that the camera isn't available, and that I should contact my dealer. Sometimes it will come on, but show an upside-down image. There are active recalls for this problem, but I can't seem to get my VIN on the recall list so that this safety issue can be fixed.

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
