The risk

A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

The remedy

The electric drive motor software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 5, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2025 IX, 2023-2024 I7, and 2022-2023 i4 vehicles. The high-voltage battery cell modules may not have been assembled properly, resulting in stress on the module frame and possible module failure.

The risk

Battery module failure may lead to a shutdown of the high-voltage system which can result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, module failure increases the risk of a fire.

The remedy

Dealers will replace specific high-voltage battery cell modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed September 11, 2025. Another notice will be sent once the remedy becomes available, anticipated December 31, 2025Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The high voltage battery combined charging unit (CCU) may not have been manufactured correctly, resulting in improperly connected and/or assembled components inside the CCU.

The risk

An improperly connected or assembled CCU can interrupt electrical power while driving and result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Dealers will replace the high voltage battery combined charging unit (CCU), free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 23, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

During vehicle start-up, the artificial sound generator control unit may experience a fault and fail to generate the external pedestrian warning sound. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, "Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles."

The risk

Without external warning sounds, pedestrians may be unaware of an approaching vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy

The gear weld seam could break, resulting in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, and increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

A dealer will replace the electric drive unit, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on November 30, 2022. While in Valet Parking Mode, the Central Information Display (CID) may not display critical safety information, such as warning messages and/or warning lights. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, another vehicle crashed into the front and rear passenger side of the vehicle without warning. The air bags failed to deploy. No injuries were sustained. No medical attention was required. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that he then received notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V079000 (Air Bags). The dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.

THIS VEHICLE HAD A BRIEF WARNING TO STOP DRIVING AND QUICKLY LOST ANY POWER. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DISABLED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. THERE WERE DEFINITE SAFTEY CONCERNS TO MYSELF AND OTHERS REGARDING COLLISION POTENTIAL. THE PROBLEM IS CONFIRMED IN MULTIPLE ELECTRIC BMW IX MODELS BY DEALERS AND OTHER OWNERS. BMW HAS CONFIRMED DRIVE CHAIN FAILURE RELATED TO MANUFACTURING DUST IN THE MOTOR OR COOLING PUMP FAILURE. THIS SAFETY PROBLEM CONTINUES TO PRESENT IN IX VEHICLES.

While driving my leased BMW iX on the highway during heavy rain, the windshield wipers suddenly malfunctioned. The wipers began striking each other violently and then completely stopped working. This caused an immediate loss of visibility at highway speed. My pregnant wife was in the vehicle at the time, creating a serious safety risk. This appears to be a safety-related defect involving the windshield wiper system. I am requesting that NHTSA document and review this complaint for possible defect investigation.

I am reporting an incident involving unintended vehicle movement/acceleration in my 2023 BMW iX xDrive50. BMW of North America inspected the vehicle and claims no defect was found; however, they refuse to provide the Event Data Recorder (EDR) data or diagnostic logs used to reach that conclusion. 2023 BMWiX with sudden acceleration issue upon parking. Vehicle has been subject to recall for unintended activation of cruise control upon parking and a software update was supposedly issued by BMW and yet this occurred to me today causing front end collision and lots of damage to my car. Not hurt nor were others but certainly could have been.
