ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

23V744000 · November 6, 2023

The defect
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Buick Encore GX, Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module (VCU) may cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go blank at vehicle startup or while driving.
The risk
A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
The VCU software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A232424320.

LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST

6 injured · crash · towed

On XXX, [XXX] was applying her brakes to prepare to turn left into the fire station. Her vehicle suddenly steered to the left causing her vehicle to enter oncoming traffic. This action caused the Chevrolet Trax to collide head on with a passing vehicle. The collision resulted in 2 totaled vehicles and multiple injuries in both vehicles. It has since been brought to our attention that there is a potential class action lawsuit for similar incidents. AIR BAGS

4 injured · crash · towed

I was in a car accident where all of my airbags deployed. The seat airbag deployed, and the deflation vents were facing me. It melted my polyester shirt into me and burned my the skin across my ribs on my left side (nearest to the door). I was not aware of the location of the vents in the airbag until during the accident. This could be an issue for shorter people, who might have the airbags deploy closer to their face. I went to the hospital for the pain I was feeling in my ribs and difficulty breathing (some of which came from this airbag).

The contact owned a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while his girlfriend was driving through an intersection at 20 MPH, another vehicle ran a red light and crashed into the vehicle, causing a T-bone impact. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The other driver was treated for an arm injury(arm unknown) by paramedics on the scene. The next morning, the contact's girlfriend went to a doctor, where she was treated for both back and neck pain. A police report was filed, and no property damage was reported. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was deemed a total loss. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was

SEAT BELTS

I was in a auto accident where I was hit at a high speed on my passenger front side resulting in my airbags to deploy along with my seatbelt failing to hold me in the seat where the seatbelt became fully extended and unlatched and won’t retract back into place resulting in me having a perforated small intestine and colon damage. I had to have trauma surgery to repair my small intestine where I had 22 staples in my stomach and a hospital stay of 5 days as a result. Vehicle has not been inspected by an inspector, but was inspected by adjuster with auto insurance which stated they felt the seatbelt failed. A lawyer wouldn’t take the case to look further into the vehicle. The vehicle was on

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Headlight Issue While driving at night on a dark country road the headlights all of a sudden reduced visibility to about 5 feet and had a blacked out dead spot (like a dark shelf). We had to drive roughly 25 miles with this limited visibility which was extremely dangerous and nerve racking. The visibility range improved the next day but the dead spot (shelf) is still visible and visibility is still poor and limited to about 100 feet. This still makes night driving very difficult and dangerous. I contacted dealership regarding issue and all they did was raised the headlights 3 inches. This only raised the dead spot up a little bit but is still visible. I notified them a second time and no

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
The check engine light illuminated on my 2024 Chevrolet Trax at 36,883 miles. An authorized Chevrolet dealer, Advantage Chevrolet of Bridgeview in Bridgeview, Illinois, diagnosed a failed evaporative emission canister purge pump and replaced it on August 6, 2026. I paid $729.46 out of pocket. I am filing this complaint because General Motors has already identified this exact part as defective and extended warranty coverage for it — but not for my model year. The part installed in my vehicle, shown on my invoice, is GM part number 25207556. That part number is listed by name in the Parts Information table of GM Special Coverage bulletin N242484740, which identifies four interchangeable

SUSPENSION
At 38,000 miles the right sway bar stabilizer linker failed and required replacement. This was inspected by a manufacturer associated dealer mechanic. No other symptoms or warning lamps prior to the failure.

SERVICE BRAKES
I was at a complete stop with my foot all the way down on my brake, sitting in traffic, and my car started rolling forward against my will. I pressed down on my brake again and the car did not stop. I almost rolled into the car in front of me. The forward collision warning did not sound. I put my car in park and it still did not stop. I then put it into reverse to avoid rolling into the car in front of me. The car stopped. I put it back in drive, and the car jolted forward and the brakes continued to work. I have since taken it in and the master cylinder was failing. My brakes were only working sometimes. I am incredibly lucky that this happened when my car was stopped and not at a high

ENGINE
We were driving on the highway when the Trax suddenly made a popping sound, all the electric went off, and then the engine cut off. We lost control of steering for a bit, we're able to get to the side of the road. We had the car towed to the local Chevrolet dealer for diagnostics. The service manager informed me the engine is unrepairable due to a hole in the engine block, likely where the engine threw a rod. In order to get the engine replaced we have to have it towed to a second dealership, which we are in the process of doing now. I just purchased this vehicle 3 weeks ago without knowing this issue was a possibility

Where these numbers come from

A complaint is one owner's account and has not been verified by NHTSA or by us. A vehicle with more complaints is not necessarily worse: models that sold in larger numbers collect more of them. How this is counted.
